  3. Not loving the 84% humidity. Am loving being at World Pride Human Rights Conference! Even if it was an early morning drive to get here. #sydneyWorldPride #transRightsAreHumanRights

  4. 2/2 Everyone is welcome at #SydneyMardiGras and #SydneyWorldPride, including some beautiful people considered conventionally attractive by society. While your social streams and news may predominantly feature these people, presumably in speedos, please know and understand they truly are the minority. Sure, you may see images of hundreds or even thousands of them together. Still, they represent only a handful of the over half a million diverse people celebrating, all equally loved and welcomed.

  5. 1/2 Currently, Sydney is the most diverse it has ever been. This week, our streets, venues and especially dance floors have been filled with a beautiful mix of people from all over the world, in many colours, shapes, and sizes and with various genders, sexualities, abilities and ages. I have met many wonderful people, including lots in their 70s and 80s, many still proudly partying with purpose. The #SydneyWorldPride theme "GATHER, DREAM, AMPLIFY" has come to fruition, and I couldn't be prouder.

  6. For those wondering, I’ll watch the Parade at home and then walk to the Party. I don’t have the energy to do the Parade and a 10-hour all-night dance party with over 10,000 people. #SydneyMardiGras #SydneyWorldPride

  7. The #SydneyMardiGras Parade is celebrating its 45th anniversary and will feature >200 floats, starting with the iconic Dykes on Bikes. It can be streamed worldwide on YouTube at 19:30 Sydney time. That’s Saturday, 25 February, at 21:30 NZDT / 17:30 JST / 09:30 CET / 08:30 UTC / 03:30 EST / 00:30 PST. #SydneyWorldPride youtube.com/live/pvfpVT9FXsg

  9. Happy #SydneyMardiGras! Tonight is the official Parade and Party and the biggest night of #SydneyWorldPride.

(I made this GIF from a video I took of the opening show at the 2016 Party, celebrating decades of Aussie drag legends, including Courtney Act.)

  11. Before the big #WorldPride celebrations kick off this evening, have a listen to this important, and wonderfully produced episode of #ScienceFriction on ABC Radio National featuring Kim Kwan and myself -- sharing our stories of growing up in the LGBTIQA+ community, and how we are now applying that to our science roles.

Really happy with how this moving episode really turned out. Reminded me that whilst we sing, dance and party tonight, we do so in celebration of all the battles we have won, and the many more we have to go.

Happy Mardi Gras everyone, and have a super world pride!

  15. Day 7 of #SydneyWorldPride was spent with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at Taronga Zoo, including time with the dingo pups. The dingo was adopted as a symbol for the Sisters’ Sydney house as it was a scapegoat in the then-recent Lindy Chamberlain incident and ostracised for its nature.

  18. It's been such a few huge days here, as we kicked of #SydneyWorldPride with several #LGBTIQA+ events!

Did a spot over at ABC for #ScienceFriction show, worked at Fair Day at the Macquarie University stall, and last night gave a talk at the Queers in Science event.

Still buzzing from it all, and there is still two weeks of events left!

Love being able to support and talk about our communities, our science, and how both these things are deeply intertwined with humans at its core.

Mardi Gras season has well and truly kicked off, here in Sydney!

  20. So, day 5 of #SydneyWorldPride was a fetish party. A person, who presented as female, attended and was non-stop taking videos of everything on her iPhone, obviously for social. I approached them and advised that:
    a) they were making me feel very uncomfortable
    b) queer spaces are sacred and not for exploitation
    c) consent isn’t just sexy; it’s mandatory
    d) their behaviour was not cool.
They promptly left, but I was disappointed that more people didn’t speak up.

  21. A really lovely evening spent with #500QueerScientists for #SydneyWorldPride - including maybe the best talk title of all time?

  22. CW: NSFW / Drug Use / Queer Culture #SydneyWorldPride

Heteronormativity and ‘love is love’ corporate sponsorship deserves rebellion, so I wanted to share these two works taken by the extremely talented Australian photographer William Yang featured in The Party at the USNW Galleries: The Rush Hour (1981) and Troughman (1980). I wouldn’t dare share some other works, but I encourage anyone visiting #SydneyWorldPride to check it out.

  23. My first two days of #SydneyWorldPride also included the Queer Contemporary exhibition at the National Art School and The Party exhibition at UNSW Galleries. The Party celebrates Sydney’s party culture from the Gay Lib movement in the early 70s to Sydney Gay Games in 2002. I talk a lot about parties, past and present. It’s important to understand that queer parties, balls and gatherings are part of our culture and a deep routed response to our unique challenges and society.

  24. Day 1 of #SydneyWorldPride included the first day of #Qtopia, Sydney’s first LGBTQIA+ museum. Props and posters from old venues brought back a lot of memories! Also included was the confronting and important recreation of St. Vincents Ward 17 South used in response to the AIDS/HIV pandemic, featuring an actual bed and medical equipment alongside projected video interviews.

  25. I spent the first two days of #SydneyWorldPride exploring, reflecting and appreciating Sydney’s proud and immense queer history. Our stories and culture are essential education. Hearing the voices of historians like St Robert and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, who were literally in the rooms that started the demonstrations in the 70s and responded to the AIDS crisis, is invaluable and something I will be forever grateful for.

  27. CW: Long toot

I watched one of my favourite films last night with the kids #TheMatrix - it’s so good and who knew primary school kids would love it as much as me! Film classifications be damned!

So I mentioned some trivia about the original writing of the character “Switch” after my eldest said she was his favourite, and I’d introduced the film saying it was made by the Wachowski sisters.

Long story short I was told “that’s like Mrs. xxxx at school”. I think there’s a transgender teacher at my kids’ school? I didn’t want to probe too far. But it being plausible makes it astonishing how far things have moved since I was a school kid.

There’s a conclusion here that I can’t articulate, about it being important for me for my kids to see and understand and accept the breadth of human diversity, and how there much more positive stuff for them to see than I was exposed to as a kid.

Anyway, hope you all have a good day and it’s also #SydneyWorldPride 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 so enjoy some cool stuff if you’re in Sydney!

  28. A behind the scenes pic from earlier tonight. Such a fantastic end to an incredible first day of #SydneyWorldPride.

  29. This makes me so proud. When I was a kid, a glimpse of the #SydneyMardiGras on the evening news meant knowing that queer people existed and I wasn’t alone. I hope these images travel the globe and deliver that message to those who need it most. They deserve to know that they aren’t alone and that a whole community is waiting to welcome them with open arms and hearts. 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️ #SydneyWorldPride
