@jessta I agree, installing accessible tram stops in Sydney Road is necessary and overdue. The ideal time is when designing and building protected cycling lanes, because this leads to an integrated and safe solution.
Looking at the proposed "detour cycling routes" offered as alternatives in 2028 during the temporary shutdown of Upfield bike path, it appears that the government is trying to make the best of a bad situation.
Those "best" solutions are awful for usability, speed, connections, not to mention the amenity of residential streets. I agree with Bicycle Network chief executive, Alison McCormack. I don't foresee a high rate of adoption. And, arguably, that's bad for everyone.
The argument from conservatives that they don't want to remove a few car parks to save the lives of cyclists because "it's bad for business" is untrue. It's been proven by research time and time again in many places around the world. The demand that the government "listen to all stakeholders" fails to recognise that we've been through all this before, and yes they had their opinions heard last time around. It's just a time-wasting distraction, and the longer we wait, the more cyclists are going to get injured or killed by people driving cars dangerously.
The obvious and intelligent option is for the government pulls their finger out and gets to work quickly to build protected bike lanes on Sydney Road

Thank YOU so much for coming along to Critical Mass Sydney Road on Thur 26 Sept, despite being chilly, we showed that can Sydney Road be fun and safe.
Sadly Gabrielle Williams MP didn't accept Tim Reads kind invitation to attend, but thank you to Christian Astourian, Tim Read MP, Aaron Moon, Ruth Jelley, Liz Irwin, Nik Dow & Nick Zull for speaking at Warr Park. We have plans over the summer to bring more fun to Melbourne's streets, so stay tuned, in the meantime get involved with your local bicycle user group and active transport advocates

Every time a car does a parallel park on #SydneyRoad it holds up the movement of all vehicles: cars, delivery trucks, trams and bicycles. Oversized utes doubly so as they need more room to manoeuvre and a larger parking space. Sydney Road needs to be revitalised to prioritise vehicle movement, as well as more pedestrian and cycling space and opportunities to Green the Sydney Road Corridor with canopy trees and vegetation to provide shade and reduce the #UrbanHeatIslandEffect that is exacerbated by global warming.
State government Department of Transport planners and local politicians should be looking at what Paris has done in recent years regarding #activetransport prioritisation and greening city streets, to create a more liveable, friendly and safe environment through Brunswick and Coburg.
Also Prioritisation of accessible tram stops is an essential part of upgrading Sydney Road.
That’s our thoughts on #SydneyRoad as #Chihuahuas who need to cycle along Sydney Road to get to businesses there, and as #ChihuahuasForClimateAction

VicRoads own survey of #SydneyRoad in 2018 resulted in 52% support for Option 3, of all options - Single lane each way for cars and trams, protected cycle lanes, and widened footpath spaces. Accessible tram stops are needed along this stretch and could be incorporated in road rebuild.
There is ample offstreet carpark and sidestreet parking available.

Parallel parking often is the cause of holding up traffic and trams on #SydneyRoad in #Coburg and #Brunswick. There are thousands of car parks in off street car parking close to Sydney Rd. Victorian State Government is dragging its heels in removing parking, implementing protected bike lanes, accessible tram stops and enlarging footpath space for pedestrians, cafes, and street vegetation making a more liveable, enjoyable shopping environment..

The post-apocalyptic giant mural at Brunswick Civic Square. With a dead No 19 tram, and bicycle on its side, the wreck of a car. Broken windows in the buildings with vegetation growing out of them. And a big male kangaroo heading down #SydneyRoad to the Town Hall building.
We wonder if this big buck kangaroo is from the #MerribekMob recolonising #Brunswick?Sadly no people in the mural. Where did you all go? Is this the civilisational collapse from burning greenhouse gases and the #ClimateCrisis and using plastics? Wake up humans. Without you, companion animals like us #chihuahuas won't survive either. It is Past time to live within planetary boundaries, circular economy and all that.

Today we are supporting provision of accessible tram stops on Sydney Road before Brunswick SkyRail construction starts.
These really nice people turned up to do a banner and placard workshop in the Square opposite Brunswick Town Hall. We decided to do a selfie in support.🐶 🐶Launch of Transport Equity week starts 1pm Sunday 17 September, meet Wilson Ave/Sydney Road, Brunswick.

Brunswick Resident's Network have prepared a submission to
Merribek Council on opportunities for Sydney Road with the
Level Crossings removal project coming up in Brunswick. You can read about it in Brunswick Voice: https://brunswickvoice.com.au/be-bold-on-sydney-road-urges-residents-network/ #activetransport #SydneyRoad #betterbybike #activemerribek -
Hey, this is smooth riding, Dad, in the Dawson street Brunswick protected bike lane. Why don’t we have more of these in #Merribek?”
“On the other hand, We had to wait with other traffic and trams while a Ute parked on #SydneyRoad longest linear car park in the Southern Hemisphere. Protected cycle lanes would make a lot of sense for cycle safety and traffic movement”

Yeah first two photos are on Sydney Road, not a tree in sight, the second two are on Royal Parade, magnificent tree lined boulevarde. #SydneyRoad needs accessible tram stops, protected bike lanes for safe #cycling, wider footpaths to walk, and trees, canopy trees to soak up pollution and express oxygen and cool the street during summer #urbanheat.. Ideally it should be done before #UpfieldBikePath closed due to Brunswick #LevelCrossingRemoval -
Thanks @CoNoNick for this wonderful photo of #JulietandJones stopping to chat (and for a pat) at the #criticalmass on #sydneyroad last night. We had an awesome time cycling on Sydney Road without worrying about cars or trucks whizzing by or the threat of a car door opening as we come along. Protected bike lanes would be ace, as well as accessible tram stops, and wider footpaths with some actual trees to moderate urban heat in summer, what with #ClimateChange getting worse.

@hailey @CoNoNick Be aware that DoT estimate of 2500 #cycling trips daily is an underestimate. Merribek council did a 24 hour bike count on 5 Feb 2019 and found the daily count at Park street at well over 7200 cyclists spread evenly between use of #SydneyRoad and #UpfieldBikePath.
That is likely mostly the commuter traffic. There are many short cycling trips to do shopping, visit cafes to Sydney Road shopping strip, yet cars are allocated most of the space to be the longest shopping strip linear car park in the southern hemisphere.
