The next thing I need to find out is how to run benchmarks directly on a mobile phone. Is there some kind of server I can tap into with a github workflow?

If you're working in the e-ID space you might have heard of the "Longfellow" and "Crescent" papers, which implement zero-knowledge proofs on existing credentials. We wrote a deep-dive with @elgharee @clemhumb into these papers and compare them here:

TLDR: very impressive work, but very difficult to reproduce as a normal software dev.

I just looked at the Austrian ID system, because somebody told me that they created a very privacy-preserving way for eIDs. However, what I see is a state-run IdP which can give information to services. So it's fully centralized, with full knowledge of who connects where.

And, if I'm not mistaken, as an IdP, the government can theoretically connect to any service you're signed up with your ID.

Very far from what #Swiyu is doing!

@jo_jo_ba @digiges That's the point of #Swiyu: it's auto-governed, so you have all the information necessary to convince a service provider of one or more of your attributes.

While there are some leftovers to be taken care of (we're working on them :), the protocols are simple, and don't involve the government in a way that lets them track you.

You still want to contact the government server anonymously to verify the service provider is legit, so there is some interaction, but it's anonymous.

Thanks a lot to #DigiGes #SocNum #HTTPS-VD and #CHPlusPlus for organizing two technical conferences on #eID #Swiyu. Very good discussions, they even caught my simplification of selective disclosure, where I left out the salt in the slides!

🔐 Excited to share insights from our Privacy-Preserving #eID workshop! Last week, we brought together 14 experts from @Be-Ys, @ELCA, @FOITT, @Kudelski, @SICPA, @Swiss Post/SwissSign, and @Swisscom to deep-dive into Switzerland's upcoming #swiyu eID system. From morning discussions on what decentralization means and how it impacts our privacy, to afternoon hands-on sessions on the swiyu test environment, and zero-knowledge proofs, participants explored cutting-edge solutions.

So the new Swiss e-ID is on its way. With really shiny election results from the parliament. As the Swiss system allows citizens to start a "referendum" to get a new law voted by its population, we won't know until 21st of April whether it's directly accepted, or needs to go through voting.

Either way, let's hope it's really starting in 2026...

On the last day of the 2024 winter session, the Council of States and the National Council adopted the Federal Act on Electronic Identity and Other Electronic Credentials in their final votes.

Result of the vote in the National Council: 170 in favour, 25 against, 1 abstention.

Voting result in the Council of States: 43 in favour, 1 against, 0 abstentions.

The e-ID Act is subject to an optional referendum. The referendum period begins with the publication of the e-ID Act in the Federal Gazette, which is planned for 9 January 2025; it is therefore expected to end on 21 April 2025.
