When I joined Mastodon and mindly.social in November 2022, a US-based server felt right. But political times have changed, and a non-US-based server seems like a better idea. I used https://mastodon.help/instances to search since it allows me to search on server size (I want a medium-sized server) and character limit (I like mindly.social's current 1500 character limit but their original 500 character limit was too restrictive -- this post is way over that). It also lets you see uptime statistics and other things, though it does not let you search on or even see the server country.

I'm considering ieji.de, though I don't currently follow anyone there and their uptime is slightly under 100%. Their privacy and green energy focuses are particularly appealing. kolektiva.social is interesting, but I can't tell where they're located. aus.social runs an alpha version of Mastodon (which isn't ideal) and mastodon.au only has an 98.14% uptime.

Anyone have any input on those particular servers, or changing servers in general?
