Good news on #electricity in #Switzerland: The #reservoirs are still well filled and are being used at a normal rate for this time of year. The #energy #imports in December have decreased to the point of starting minor(!) #exports in the past days.
The latest #SwissGrid #EnergyData added a bit more end user #consumption to October, but so far it looks like there were real #EnergySavings that increased over October. Or there are extremely late reports. What matters are the reservoirs.

Instead of saving #energy, some of #Switzerland’s consumption reports have simply been delayed so much that #SwissGrid’s latest data always suggests fresh savings.
And while we #import #electricity every #winter (currently 6× as much as the reserve #PowerPlant in #Birr could produce), some probably assume that we would only import the surplus energy at night. However, a closer look at the #EnergyData shows that substantial amounts are also imported during the day, especially over noon.

After #Switzerland’s hope of #energy savings in September has vanished into thin air, we can expect that also the savings in October, which are still visible at the moment, are really only a sign of severely delayed #consumption #reports at #SwissGrid.
A warm and rainy autumn helped fill #reservoirs and keep energy #imports low, but the latter are rising sharply right now according to ENTSO-E. We are importing now 5× as much #electricity as the reserve #PowerPlant’s gas turbines could produce.

The biggest challenge for a #Swiss #EnergyData Hub will probably be obtaining timely #data.
While ENTSO-E publishes #Switzerland’s total #electricity consumption (including pumped storage) with a delay of a couple of hours, it takes #SwissGrid more than 6 weeks to publish the full figures for end-user consumption. And that’s what we need in order to know whether the #energy was consumed or stored.
In times of a looming energy crisis that requires fast decisions, that’s less than ideal.
