  2. Best Watch Company Logos, Part 10

    10. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Initials & Wordmark combo

Fir the 10th installment of my series on favorite logos, we have one of the rare logos incorporating the wordmark of the brand that I like. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s logo celebrates and remembers the 1937 joining of forces between the watchmaking expertise of Edmond Jaeger and the manufacturing prowess of Antoine LeCoultre. The JL at the top is a symmetrical joining of the last initials of both men and to me, is reminiscent of a pallet fork; making sure that even when not on a watch that the logo reminds the viewer what business Jaeger-LeCoultre are in.

Moving to the wordmark, the J in Jaeger & final ‘e’ in LeCoultre are joined by an underlining ribbon that makes a visual statement of the joining of the two men’s businesses & passions on all of their watches; an agreement that has lasted almost 90 years. May it long continue.

What do you think? Does the Jaeger-LeCoultre logo make your list as a favorite or as a not-favorite?

  3. A Change in the Winds?

This past week, I took a Thursday-Sunday road trip and I brought a total of three watches with me; the baby Alpinist, the Blood Moon (my night watch) and my Falcon.

It was the week for the Alpinist to be on wrist, but when I travel, I like to have at least one option depending on the situation and wardrobe I pack. I packed a couple of shirts (both black with red & white features) that either the Blood Moon or the Falcon wouldn’t clash with, but it turns out that I never took the Alpinist off for the whole trip, even for bed.

I never even wore the two shirts I planned on wearing that would have clashed with the Alpinist. I actually wore a t-shirt I don’t usually wear in public and a road trip themed shirt made specifically for this trip in order to keep the Alpinist on wrist all week.

Does this mean I don’t like my Falcon any more? I don’t think so (I will be participating in @Aurelian’s #1wc with the Falcon), but it does open the door to the question, right? Maybe I just figured I was going to get a lot of wrist time for the Falcon soon, I typically always wear the Blood Moon to sleep and just didn’t want to shirk on wrist time for the Alpinist and it’s as simple as that?

Whatever it means regarding the Falcon, I know what it means for the Alpinist; it’s not leaving the collection. After I won it as a door prize at a meetup, I wasn’t sure if I was going to keep it because I wasn’t even looking to add a new watch to the collection. In fact, I’m trying to downsize it to 10 watches & this complicates that. The heart wants what the heart wants though, I suppose.

Do you have a watch that entered your collection unexpectedly and earned its way into a permanent spot?

  4. Why I Dislike the Royal Pop

    (and it’s incestuous cousins)

Yes, this is a hater post. So what? I’m allowed to hate the Royal Pop, just like you are allowed to inexplicably love it.

    Why do I hate it?

First off, it’s plastic. It’s designed to not be durable; to not last. In a world that is growing ever more lenient of the disposable and temporary (which apparently includes people), do we really need another god-damned knick knack destined to end up in a land fill?

Second, it’s an expensive piece of plastic shit. $400/$420 for these bag charms? You can find and buy multiple watches made out of actual metal for the same price. Actual metal watches that will potentially last decades and generations. But I guess the rich need something to waste all the money on that they refuse to pay employees or in taxes after already being able to actually afford a $20,000 Daytona they’ll rarely use to it’s full potential. Not fake afford, actually afford.

Third, last & most importantly, to me; Swatch seems to be going all in on the plastification (it is TOO a word! 😉) of their watches and brand, and even other brands! It feels like they don’t care that they are allowing Omega to rot faster than the organic material surrounding their disposable watches in the world’s landfills. By devoting money, design effort & resources to these bIOceRaMiC Happy Meal toy abominations of watches, they are just killing off an iconic brand. Is it any coincidence that Omega has slipped to third in the Morgan Stanley report behind Cartier after the introduction of the MoonSwatch & just before the Swatch x AP collab? I think not!

Comment or not. Makes no difference. Too many people are too distracted by the hype machine to actually think past the end of their fucking noses. Keep telling the Emperor his non-existent clothes are great, folks. Are watches THAT boring to you that you go ape shit over a little color? Or are people just that uneducated about watches to think these are worthy of the hype?

  5. Swiss watchmakers 🤦‍♂️ watched in horror as their über-expensive tickers got KO'd by Japan's quartz juggernaut. Turns out, clinging to mechanical watches while your competitors zoom past you with tech advancements isn't a winning strategy. Meanwhile, Bretton Woods was just the cherry 🍒 on top of their ticking time bomb. Complete shocker, right? 😱

  6. Tariffs and Tick-Tocks: How Swiss Watches Are Facing Their Costliest Hour

For centuries, Swiss watches have stood as the ultimate symbol of precision, tradition, and style. But as of August 1st, their journey into the U.S. has become a lot more expensive. A new 39% tariff on Swiss timepieces has landed like a hammer blow on the industry, and the impact is already ticking louder than a pocket watch in a silent room. #watches #watchnews #hodynnykar #swisswatches #tariffs

  9. Luxury meets history in the heart of Melbourne. Vacheron Constantin has reimagined its Melbourne boutique, blending luxury with history inside this stunning heritage-listed space that we were lucky enough to visit last week.

From the boomerang-shaped table to VC-branded marble tic-tac-toe, every detail is designed to feel more like an artist’s salon than just your average watch store.
