CW: USpol: Beto O'Rourke and the Texas Senate race.
Disclaimer before I write this, I support and have done some campaigning for James Talarico. I also campaigned for Beto O'Rourke.
Just a reminder, as #BetoORourke crawls out of the woodwork give commentary and campaign for people, that he is basically responsible for a lot of the problems that #JamesTalarico is now facing with #SwingVoters in #Texas: the last time #Democrat had this much traction for a #Senate seat, he lost by a slim margin, then less than 2 years later stood on a stage and said "Hell yes, we're going to take your guns!"
For people like me, it seemed like he had had a complete mental breakdown when he realized he couldn't win the presidential primary, as if anyone has ever been entitled to win a presidential primary. For most of Texas, it seemed like outright #corruption, that someone who had almost been a senator was willing to back a no-go position in order to woo a small group of party elite billionaires, against the wishes of the vast majority of his own state, even his own home district.
I agree that it's stupid, but if Texans seem confusingly interested in this bizarre mythology that #Talarico is a "secret vegan", remember that a lot of them are still getting over the time that a Democrat blatantly lied to them about a central policy issue in order to get elected to their senate seat, and a lot of people who actually voted for him feel like they had dodged a bullet when he didn't win. Black voters especially seem to be really hesitant about him, because right now, Democrat leadership is scrambling to throw every marginalized group under the bus: we don't know how hard it will be to get him to even show up for civil rights issues.
So as #DemocratParty leaders sit there scratching their heads as to why no one votes for their candidates, remember, nobody can trust their candidates.
Again, I am saying this as someone who supports Talarico and thinks the country would be much better off with him in the Senate. It is night and day between him and #Paxton, who openly took bribes to dismiss charges against people, and who was recently seen cavorting in Mexico with yet another mistress, all the while running a campaign that is firmly rooted in hatred for minorities. My issue isn't with Talarico here, it's with Beto O'Rourke and the corrupt Democrat Party leadership he represents: they have created an incredibly difficult situation for everyone trying to support #CivilRights and fight conservative #authoritarianism.
Democrat leadership must be removed.

Forget left vs. right, what's the real political divide? G. Elliott Morris highlights a new paper: anti-system sentiment drove President Trump's 2016 and 2024 wins. These voters distrust both parties and feel the system is rigged, making understanding this bloc key to future elections. Appealing to "The Middle" No Longer Works in U.S. Elections
The #2024election showed us that trying to win over the elusive "middle" isn’t the way to victory anymore. When #Harris pivoted to target #moderate #voters, focusing on broad #MiddleClass issues, it left her base feeling unmotivated.
The "middle class" is too diverse for a one-size-fits-all approach, and only 45% of people identify in that bucket; economic needs vary by #race and region, so generic centrist rhetoric doesn’t resonate. Meanwhile, a shrinking pool of true #SwingVoters means the key to victory is energizing the base.
While #Trump rallied his base around clear priorities, Harris’s appeal to centrists didn’t hit the mark and likely led to lower enthusiasm and turnout among her supporters. In an era where most voters are deeply committed to their beliefs, an overly broad approach can make a campaign seem out of touch and uninspiring.

Interesting paper from 2012 (and how much has changed since then?): "swing voters" might not actually exist, or at least not in any meaningful numbers. This paper makes a case that "swing voters" are an illusion created by the research methods and statistics used by polling organizations.

Who are America’s real swing voters? @damemagazine’s Parker Molloy says that it might be “left-leaning voters who are just about ready to walk away from the political process altogether” — and there’s a lot of them out there. What’s the first step to engaging them? Understanding what most voters DON'T want. “A study by Harvard’s Shorenstein Center found that 2020 election coverage was mostly horse-race nonsense, with barely any attention given to the policies that actually impact people’s lives,” Molloy writes. “When the media treats elections like a reality-TV show, it just reinforces the idea that politics is disconnected from real life.”

You have to remember that it was just a handful of "#SwingVoters" in a handful of mid-Western states who put #TheOrangeMenace in office in 2016.Support for #Harris might be greater *nationwide*, but elections are decided by the uninformed & easily fooled. 😞

[an excellent description of gerrymandering of political districts in the USA]
“Why does the USA draw district maps with absolutely bonkers shapes? And how do squiggly districts help the wrong politicians win elections? And have we been pronouncing "Gerrymandering" wrong for 200 years?...”

Was the #DNC’s #silence on #trans #rights at the an #omen for #KamalaHarris’ #presidency?
In their effort to #appeal to #swingvoters, #Democrats didn't have a #trans #speaker at this year's convention.

All this focus on the 'Middle Class' assumes that a bunch of poor folk is something inevitable & inescapable
The working poor are not willing to make that assumption
#PoorPeoplesCampaign is lifting up the voices of the REAL #SwingVoters :
The millions upon millions who aren't voting because they're waiting for SOMEONE to speak to them & for them -

Biden made a big mistake caving into the pressure to withdraw but the "blame" will go to the #Dem party when they lose to #Drumpf in November.
Don't know why but #Harris now seems to be the presumptive nominee but, AFAIK, it's a wide open convention and ANYONE can throw their hat into the ring.
If Harris is the nominee, I'll vote for her but I don't like her, never did, & I don't think she has any chance to win in Nov because there are too many #SwingVoters (Independents & Dems/Repubs who could go either way) who will NOT vote for her because she's a woman, from SF & considered "too liberal" & because she's not white.
#HIllery was white but she was a woman and she lost to Drumpf. Do you really expect Harris to do any better? 🤷♂️
I think not!
Newsome would have the best chance but it's unclear how much support he has w/in the Dem party, if Harris remains in the race.
So, I'm going to start making plans to live abroad from 2025-2029. Hope for the best but plan for the worst.
