  1. After waiting 10 yrs since planting for our 50 Blue & Black gum trees to have their 1st flowering, Spring ‘25 they finally did.

And today I sighted the 1st 2 Swift parrots (critically endangered) to feed on those trees.

    Well worth the wait!

We’ve had occasional visits to random trees in the past, but we planted those seedlings specifically for any Swift parrots that came foraging. They face massive threats to survival from forestry destroying their habitat, to Sugar Gliders eating the adult females.

  2. Helped with the giant swiftie parrot sculpture build by testing out fabric paint on squares using different saturation and techniques. All under the creative direction of the artist, Fiona, from Lock the Gate Alliance who came up with the sculpture idea. #craftivism #SwiftParrot #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

  3. Spent some time with several others cutting up old bike inner tubes into lengths that could be used to help tie the bamboo frame of the sculpture together. Also a bit of ad hoc colouring in of Swift parrots (intended for the kids but plenty to go round). #craftivism #SwiftParrot #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

  4. Another Tasmania shot from last year. A magical few minutes spent with the endangered Swift Parrots feeding on the side of the road at Adventure Bay, Bruny Island, Tasmania.

  5. CW: Auspol: Queensland State government and Nature Conservancy jointly purchase Vergemont station at the headwater of Lake Eyre basin, to create a conservation corridor. Only 60 million hectares to go.

“The 352,000ha property…is located at the headwaters of the Lake Eyre Basin and will join existing national parks to create a conservation corridor of roughly 1.4m hectares.

“…property contains 34 ecosystems and ranks higher than 90% of existing national parks in the state for habitat representation.

“…key habitat for threatened species, including the endangered night parrot and vulnerable yellow-footed rock-wallaby.

The Albanese government “committed to protecting 30% of land by 2030 in an attempt to halt species extinctions and environmental degradation.

“…60 million hectares, an area three times the size of Victoria, will need to be protected by 2030 to reach the goal.”

  6. Very special bird today!

It's the endangered Swift Parrot ! (also Bird of the Year).

In fact, it's THREE endangered Swift Parrots.

I can also confirm, when they take flight, they are indeed swift. (someone over the road spooked all the birds and these guys were gone in a flash - it wasn't me that spooked them, I was lying on the wet ground).

  7. The Critically Endangered Swift Parrot named as the Guardian Australian Bird of the Year 2023.
There are only a few hundred breeding pairs of this bird which migrates between Tasmania and Victoria and is reliant on native forest habitat (which is still being logged and cleared)
I voted for the Gouldian Finch facing threats from gas fracking
