THE VIRGIN SPRING (’60): An incredible viewing experience. Ingmar Bergman’s adaptation of an old Swedish ballad about a virgin’s brutal rape and murder, and her father’s vengeance, is not soon easily forgotten, and not just due to that theme. Stunningly constructed, photographed, and told. Each shot often feels like a painting come to life. The starkness often adds to the grimness. And some very deep themes explored throughout on religion and revenge. Truly a masterpiece. #swedishfilm
