  1. Diamine Inkvent Day 9-12

Resuming the inkvent posts as swatch Wednesday posts. I took pictures of day 9-12 before I got totally swamped with moving stuff, but I’ll have to take the rest of the pictures in the new house. (I do have all my swatches, though!)

Day 9: Bittersweet. Very bright green, no shimmer or sheen. I thought maybe this one would be a bit hard to read but it seems fine. It’s not quite as day-glow as it looks in that photo but it is pretty bright in the sun. I love greens and a lot of my other light greens are a bit muddy in comparison so it’s fairly unique in my collection. Will get used for sure.

Nostalgia ink swatch photographed at an angle for the shimmer.

Day 10: Nostalgia. Brownish burgundy/purple with pink shimmer. Very pretty, and I rather liked playing with it on the paint brush where it’s a bit lighter than in the handwriting. Not a colour I might have chosen for myself but I’m looking forwards to using it because I think it’s going to fill a nice neutral-adjacent niche in my monthly palettes.

Brr! ink swatch showing the feathering in the paintbrush swatch and some of the shimmer.

Day 11: Brrr! Light blue with blue shimmer. I love this colour a lot but it stained the heck out of my paintbrush. Which isn’t a huge deal (I mean, it’s a paint brush, it was bound to happen eventually) but I’d probably have used an older brush if I’d realized it would be that bad. Maybe I’ll try some pen cleaner or the ultrasonic cleaner on the paintbrush just to see what happens but I don’t have high hopes. It’s a pigment ink so it shouldn’t be a surprise but I didn’t have as much trouble with Carousel and staining. I’m going to be careful to put this into my pens that are easier to clean and none of the ones with clear feeds. I do rather like how the swatch feathered a bit so it looks like frost, though!

Bubbly ink swatch at an angle to show the iridescent shimmer better.

Day 12: Bubbly. A very champagne gold with iridescent shimmer. This doesn’t look too bad in the swatch but the shading makes it go to the edge of hard to read in my journal writing. I’ll be curious to see if it behaves better or worse in a pen. This is another one I wouldn’t likely have chosen for myself, but the iridescent shimmer really makes it pop and live up to the name, plus it’s not like anything else in my collection.

I liked all of these inks a lot, though I’m going to have to be careful using Brrr! now that I know it stains.

    Sailor x BlueBlack Cherry Coke

This ink is from my green #FPSanta! I'd say it lives up to the name. Red with a black undertone, green sheen if *very* inky. I've used it for a while in this pen (Sailor 21K F) and the flow is excellent.

  3. A wee #SwatchWednesday this week.

Now that my Inkvent has arrived (no spoilers!), I've decided to dig out my #Chromatography strips to get a more accurate idea of how they're made up compared to my usual paper towel pseudo-chromatography. You can see how limited the latter is compared to the chromatograms.

The inks here are Tono & Lims Rainy Winter & Space Sunset. They're both chromashading inks with some similar notes but very different end results.

    Tom's Studio One-Dip-Nib

A Japanese exclusive collab ink that I received in Secret #FPSanta. Seems quite similar to some of the sheen inks in the Yurameku series and would probably fit right in in that series.

Third pic is progressively wider lines made with this nib from 0.5 to 8 mm.

  5. Don't know if this counts for #SwatchWednesday too, but one of my grail #nibs arrived this morning (thanks to my Auntie-in-law for agreeing to take delivery and carrying this back to me from the U.S.)

Mark Bacas "Architect Hybrid" on a JOWO # 6 medium nib. Dip-tested with Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-Peki.

Apart from Mr. Bacas, massive thanks to Lisa, who handled my order from the first enquiry email, right to the (ecstatic, enamoured) feedback sent I her this morning. 🥹

  6. #SwatchWednesday
In Scotland in the 1970s, wine wasn’t something the working classes ever really drank. I remember with fondness the bottles of Bull’s Blood and Blue Nun at the dinner table when mum and dad were being ‘posh’. Decades later I like to think I can tell the difference between my clarets and burgundies and that’s because mum and dad decided to learn all about wine…

Today’s ink swatch is in honour of that Bull’s Blood wine from Romania: Dominant Industry Romania Red. It’s one of their standard inks, but because it’s so saturated it has some great sheening. Apologies for the “ghosting”. This is a super-busy notebook.

Kyo no oto No. 7 Hisoku 秘色

Mise porcelain, Hisoku in Japanese, is a Tang-dynasty style of celadon ceramics. This ink seems to be going for the bluer-darker side of this kind of glaze. This is a modern example of the color that this ink is going for: 24h.pchome.com.tw/prod/QFAEJ9-

Nice ink in a broader nib, dry-ish and I imagine would probably be a bit gritty on a finer nib. Very dramatic shading.

Thanks to my 2024 red tier #FPSanta for this ink.

  9. @penfount Here’s one of my favorites from the 2024 Inkvent calendar. This one definitely a candidate for a full bottle.

Day 8 is Marley, a purple gray with some amazing chromatography with a rose hue and a vivid teal making an appearance.

Swatches are made on Canson, cold press 140lb watercolor paper with a brass Kakimori nib. I’m using a self-inking stamp from Midori that has an oil based ink. My wife spotted this stamp at a Kinokuniya Portland visit.

    Waterman Inspired Blue
    Pilot Custom FK-300R M

Despite really liking Waterman inks, I have never tried this one until now—sky blue isn't really my thing generally. But this ink has some nice depth to it. I think I prefer it over Pilot Iro Kon-peki for this color "area". Thanks to @Halfcelestialelf for sending me the sample.

This is written with the pen that I sent for #FPSanta rematch, a very nice vintage Pilot! penfount.social/@paradoxmo/113

    Colorverse Golden Gate Bridge

@jezlyn It does have gold sheen (:

One of the Colorverse SF Pen Show inks. I would say it's quite similar to Félicette just without the shimmer.

Pen is Platinum 1970s long-short M (which I tested before I sent it to my #FPSanta giftee)

  12. Sort of a different situation for #SwatchWednesday today!

Instead of a writing sample, how about a doodle sample?

Also I seem to be out of swatch cards.

    Inks:
    sailor - sakura mori
    sailor- yozakua
    pilot - hana ikada
    sailor ink studio - 237

I was feeling the need to try out more pink. But I am also a purple person.

  13. @penfount

New ink day! Van Diemans Encore collection Pas De Deux. I though flat spots on the corner of the bottle will provide functionality similar to Waterman ink bottles, but no. It is a beautiful bottle, but I think Van Diemans missed out on a great opportunity.

  14. So this ink was very meh for me.

    Lamy Violet Blackberry

As you can see on the swatch card, it’s purple. And it has good flow to it.

On the Hobonichi paper, it’s dark purple if you squint. Camera couldn’t get it, but it’s like a very matte dark purple.

I guess sort of like the actual blackberry.
And less controversial than its cousin Dark Lilac.

Good thing I just got a pack of cartridges to try instead of a bottle!
