In medieval #Europe, Jews were forced to prove their religious purity through #conversion, #baptism or public #renunciation of their faith. The #Nazis demanded a certain #racialpurity. Under oppressive regimes of various kinds, Jews had to demonstrate their political purity – that they were not either #capitalist #conspirators or #communist #subversives."

There is, of course, a tautology at play in the arguments from both Lipstadt and Sharansky: Comparing Israel to the Nazis is antisemitic because it is an outrageous exaggeration. But many of those who make these comparisons argue that there are legitimate parallels to draw between the two governments.
Jean Améry, a Jewish writer from Austria who survived the Holocaust, wrote about his great dismay with the European left’s turn against Israel and Zionism — including Nazi comparisons — but acknowledged disturbing similarities between rumors of Israeli soldiers torturing Palestinian prisoners and his own experience at the hands of the Nazis during the Holocaust, which he said tested his allegiance to the state. 'In my value system, for all that I have experienced the full horror of its concretization, the abstract category ‘human being’ outranks the concept ‘Jew,’' Améry wrote in 1977. 'When barbarism begins, even existential commitments must end.'
Yeshayahu Leibowitz, the brilliant Israeli scientist and public intellectual who escaped Europe for Mandate Palestine shortly before the Holocaust, called Israeli judges who allowed Arab prisoners to be tortured 'Judeo-Nazis' and warned that the entrenched occupation of the West Bank and Gaza coupled with rising ethno-nationalism among Israeli Jews was sending the country down the same road as Germany.

The argument that Israel’s opponents are using the Holocaust in offensive ways to score cheap political points is weakened, somewhat, by the kneejerk insistence by many of the country’s supporters that Iran and Hamas are equivalent to the Nazis and that its Oct. 7 attack was an act of genocide. It seems that both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remain stuck in a framework where the Holocaust seems like the most potent point of reference.
Israeli philosopher Omri Boehm has lamented that the Israeli government is 'using the memory of the Holocaust to fight human rights' while, at the same time, the global left is dismissing Holocaust remembrance."

The #Trump admin called the article “false,” but within hours of its publication the service’s acting commandant, Adm. Kevin Lunday, issued a memo forcefully denouncing symbols such as #swastikas & #nooses, & emphasizing that both remain prohibited.
Lunday said at the time that his Nov 20 memo would supersede any other language.

Spox for the #CoastGuard & #DHS, which oversees the military service, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The symbols issue is expected to come up at a #House committee hearing Tuesday.

The latest policy that was rolled out late Thursday night also unequivocally banned the display of any divisive or #hate symbols from all #USCG locations. The earlier version stopped short of banning the symbols, instead saying that commanders could take steps to remove them from public view & that the rule did not apply to private spaces outside of public view, such as family housing.

The late-night change came the same day media outlets, led by WaPo, discovered that the #CoastGuard had written a policy…that called those same symbols “potentially divisive.” The term was a shift from a years-long policy…that said symbols like swastikas & nooses were “widely identified with oppression or hatred” & called their display “a potential #hate incident.”

Each of the #military services is also reviewing its “harassment” policies in response to #Hegseth’s directive, though unlike with the #USCG, any wording specific to #swastikas would likely appear in their separate #extremism guidelines [we’ll see]. It does not appear there is wording addressing swastikas specifically within those current policy documents.

Previous guidance put in place in 2019 said #USCG commanders could order #swastikas, #nooses or other symbols to be removed even if it was determined the display did not rise to the level of a #hate incident. That policy was enacted months after a #CoastGuard officer, Lt Christopher Hasson, was charged with plotting a large-scale attack on Democratic lawmakers, including then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"Hungarian Prime Minister #ViktorOrbán’s government launched a continentwide manhunt when a group of European antifascists attacked a #NeoNazi rally three years ago.
"Orbán, though, showed no such appetite for cracking down on the annual #fascist rally, which this February drew attendees sporting SS patches, #swastikas, and the '#Totenkopf' death’s head symbol — all under the watchful eye of Hungarian police.
"The aggressive response to antifascist activists, compared to the kid-gloves treatment of neo-Nazi demonstrators, has roiled European politics for years.
On Thursday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio joined the fray, inserting the U.S. into the debate by declaring the antifascist group that attacked the 2023 rally a terrorist organization."Though the designation is aimed at foreign groups, Rubio said that he was acting in accordance with President Donald Trump’s National Security Presidential Memorandum-7, or #NSPM7, regarding purported 'domestic' terrorists.
"The terror designation will cut off the small #AntifaOst group, and three others designated by Rubio on Thursday, from raising funds in the U.S. It could also imperil American #antifascist groups with civil and criminal allegations of 'material support' for terrorism, a civil rights lawyer warned.
" 'The clever way to go about it for them is to designate some foreign organization, because a foreign organization can be designated and there is almost no #DueProcess,' said Shane Kadidal, a lawyer at the Center for Constitutional Rights. “Then, you go after the U.S. groups for supposedly coordinating their political messages with the messages of the foreign groups.'
"Rubio’s announcement follows on the heels of one from Trump in September that he was designating antifa a 'major terrorist organization,' which has no basis in law. The foreign terrorist organization designations, however, entail significant legal consequences.
"Under a 2010 ruling from the Supreme Court, domestic groups can face '#MaterialSupport' charges for providing nonviolent support to designated foreign terrorist organizations.
"Kadidal said the Trump administration could essentially try to use the foreign terrorist designations as a workaround to target domestic antifascists with 'material support' charges. Key questions such as whether domestic activists had knowledge and intent to coordinate with foreign groups can be left for a jury to decide based on circumstantial evidence, he said.
" 'That is one of those things that makes this so dangerous,' he said. 'The jury may just decide, ‘Yeah, whatever you have alleged about this coordination of messaging is true, because these are bad people in front of me.'
" 'Juries do this thing all the time. They jump to conclusions.' "
