This is all of our governments' first English-language newspaper they pick up every morning. I will bet you anything there were people in government offices from Stockholm to Warsaw and from Berlin to Rome who started their week nodding along to this and yearning.

Plus, as a fellow liberal democracy enjoyer, I GET why those who grew up behind the Iron Curtain were true believers. I wouldn't want to be associated with mouth-breathing tankies either, but:
1. there is a whole universe between THAT and working as assets of a foreign government intent on blocking EU integration forever

Most days, I want to strangle them for the position they've put all of us in the #EU in (not to mention Ukraine!), but sometimes I see this stuff and start to design Europilling strategies. These dudes who grew up like this because they were bored with their good eurolives as they watched Tom Cruise jump into fighter jets and never outgrew the Space Pew!Pew! soapopera movies just need new, EUropean hobbies.

Eu tinha acabado de me mudar da Califórnia (onde não tinha televisão) para a Europa e lembro-me de me perguntar o que diabos isso poderia ter a ver com a vida deles.

@DqTube @randahl It also depends on how anglo your media consumption is. AFP, RFI, France24, Portuguese outlets etc. all have coverage of the entire continent, which often includes cultural events, cool music, sports etc, not just news. Although you'd think this would be bigger news:

I have to regularly update the Oubliette as you guys start posting in Swedish, German, Czech etc about some new character in whichever B plot of US politics entertains you this week. nbd except--this week's filter update is giving me anxiety for the future of 🇪🇺 strategic autonomy.
Me, coping: it's OK, they're not going to have free elections again anytime soon, by the time whichever faction of the civil war gets to elect Sexy Bateman we'll rearm the #EU.

I made up #SvenProblems but while aping 'murica is by no means restricted to Northern EUropeans, it's more intense in parts of the Union than in others, Renato captured it so well:BTW, we invented both fascism and the US (in that order), so to me the US taking it for a spin isn't as worrying as EUropeans wanting to do the same because the US is the Main Character on the Telly/Insta/centre of their universe.

@boab @EUCommission Why? It's a genuine question because as a European I'm struggling to understand so many Europeans' bizarre emotional INVESTMENT in all things American. (Especially Northerners #SvenProblems) Imagine if most people responding in this thread had a tenth of these types of emotional sunk costs in Russia/Putin. Ukraine would have Crimea back by now instead of not having enough air defence to protect civilians from being murdered by Russian bombs every night. Why is HE your focus?

It's only "incredible" because you're used to thinking of anglos as your superiors, inherently your betters, the cool, forever-rich Main Character on the Telly/Instagram who could never be surpassed by those you found sufficiently beneath you in Europe to call "PIIGS" because teehee The Economist and The Financial Times said it so it was h i l a r i o u s.
