  1. RIP #BillAtkinson (1951–2025). During his time at #Apple, he was central to the development of the graphical user interface of the Lisa and later the Macintosh, and is best known for creating MacPaint, QuickDraw, and HyperCard.

Atkinson is also credited for designing Venice, a chancery script bitmap font. Along with #SusanKare’s designs, it was one the “City” fonts that came with the original #Macintosh. fontsinuse.com/type_designers/

I love #SusanKare's classic 32x32 monochrome Macintosh icons.

Sometimes when you don't know where to start, having the most constraints imposed upon you can be the most freeing.

  3. OK, yeah, it comes with all the trappings of commercialised high art, but that is the most gorgeous 32×32 1-bit Great Wave pixel art I've ever seen.

  4. A lovely Christmas card I received from Susan Kare about a decade ago after sharing my Steve Jobs 32x32 pixel tattoo. It goes on the mantle every year, and her bandana gift is on the bedroom wall!

  9. For my last #MARCHintosh 2024 post, I point to a particularly iconic work by Susan Kare (do you see what I did there?!) from the early days of the Macintosh, as seen at the "Places of Invention" exhibit at the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C.

Steve Jobs, rendered in pixels, 32x32, black and white. On paper ... and flesh. Obviously, I am fond of the work. 🙂

  10. Happy birthday to the Apple Macintosh! This week marks 40 years since Apple unveiled the original Macintosh at an event in Cupertino.

  12. Susan Kare, Iconic Designer | Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation | … I saw and used these in the late 80s and it was wonderful

We were using a Macintosh for layout of UCL’s student magazine “Pi”, having previously spent squillions of pounds on Letraset. It was magic… although some of that may have been the fumes from the Scotch “spray mount.”

  13. In A *NEW* GRAPHIC DESIGN PROGRAM, the authorDavid Reinfurt talks about Susan Kare and her famous animated GIFs for the Apple Mac user interface of 1984. On p.133 he gives us an assignment: design an animated graphic that means “wait”. I tried with a cartoon character who can't stay awake anymore. Pixel animation is so constrained that it's super fun.

  14. Mistodon: the incredible @Polyducks also found inspiration in #SusanKare's interface design and #geisha sample art for the #AppleMacintosh and its #MacPaint application, taking them in a new direction in this fantasy OS desktop design. This piece was included in the new MIST1121 artpack collection.

  15. Mistigram: this is a #teletext adaptation (by @atonalosprey of #SusanKare's #1bit #geisha illustration accompanying the initial release of Bill Atkinson's #MacPaint for the #AppleMacintosh 39 years ago in 1984. It was included in the new MIST1121 artpack collection.

I got this towel from 1 Infinite Loop, Palo Alto in 1995-ish.
Apple was really on the ropes back then and, I’ve no doubt, my beach towel and novelty keyring purchase from that single, on-campus Apple Store helped them get through those hard times to where they are today.
    No?

  21. Last week I posted a set of old-school Apple icons from the first Macintosh OS by Susan Kare:

@chucker noted that Clarus, the “dogcow” icon, was back in macOS Ventura. While it’s a modern non-pixelated version, she has indeed made a return.

» Industrial designers are aware of the work by #DieterRams, #RayEames and #EttoreSottsass. Communication designers are aware of the work by #PaulaScher, #OtlAicher and #AprilGreiman. So it only makes sense that user interface designers should be aware of the work by #CordellRatzlaff, #SusanKare and #KaiKrause
