  1. @drdrang nice! But this conversation can’t be had without mentioning Susan Kare, the woman responsible for those early Apple icons.

  2. In early 2007 when I was in San Francisco to cover Macworld 2007, we rented a car and visited the Mothership in Cupertino.

After our tour of 1 Infinite Loop, I sought out the restroom and found it, marked with this sign that I photographed.

It stunned me and has sat restless in my mind these 20 years. How can this be the Apple HQ men's bathroom sign??

Edit: It's about the text centering.

  7. RIP #BillAtkinson (1951–2025). During his time at #Apple, he was central to the development of the graphical user interface of the Lisa and later the Macintosh, and is best known for creating MacPaint, QuickDraw, and HyperCard.

Atkinson is also credited for designing Venice, a chancery script bitmap font. Along with #SusanKare’s designs, it was one the “City” fonts that came with the original #Macintosh. fontsinuse.com/type_designers/

  12. @tripplehelix

I love #SusanKare's classic 32x32 monochrome Macintosh icons.

Sometimes when you don't know where to start, having the most constraints imposed upon you can be the most freeing.

  17. OK, yeah, it comes with all the trappings of commercialised high art, but that is the most gorgeous 32×32 1-bit Great Wave pixel art I've ever seen.

  19. A lovely Christmas card I received from Susan Kare about a decade ago after sharing my Steve Jobs 32x32 pixel tattoo. It goes on the mantle every year, and her bandana gift is on the bedroom wall!

  23. For my last #MARCHintosh 2024 post, I point to a particularly iconic work by Susan Kare (do you see what I did there?!) from the early days of the Macintosh, as seen at the "Places of Invention" exhibit at the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C.

Steve Jobs, rendered in pixels, 32x32, black and white. On paper ... and flesh. Obviously, I am fond of the work. 🙂
