I've been openly critical of Susan Cooper's structuring of The Dark Is Rising series of books.
Sequential battles to win amulets to complete a belt of power doesn't work for me.
However the rest of those books are still quite good enough to more than make up that shortcoming.

Strangely the earliest example I've found is a British mytho-fantasy book series called The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper that first appeared in 1965.
Otherwise excellent, the repeated, inevitable victory by the books' main characters becomes increasingly irksome.

Following in the footsteps of Will Stanton and Bran Davies, high up above the Dysynni valley on Craig yr Aderyn (Birds' Rock), looking towards Cader Idris and the mountain fastnesses of Y Brenin Llwyd. A place that I have known since I was at primary school, but have never been to before except in my imagination.
Christmas Eve in my annual re-read of #TheDarkIsRising. A very important date in the book, it gets three chapters and marks a pivotal midpoint; Will gains the gift of Gramarye and the third sign, but Merrriman places too much strain on Hawkin's love for him.
Soundtracking this tonight with Vince Guaraldi's 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' which is suitably seasonal if lacking dramatic tension!

The five books were in a series published between 1965 and 1977.
#SusanCooper was the author and the series was called "The Dark Is Rising".
It involved a lot of mythical history & magic, a treasure and children having fantastic adventures.
From memory the author used the last book to attempt a re-orientation of the characters towards a non-magical modern adulthood.
Following in the footsteps of Susan Cooper today in the hills above Aberdyfi. First a revisit to the Eglwys Gwyddelod ('Church of the Irish') Bronze Age cairn circle - my previous visit was in dreary rain a decade ago, today a complete contrast with wonderful views.
Then to Llyn Barfog (where Arthur cast out the afanc and The Lady appeared) and Carn March Arthur (the hoofprint left by Arthur's horse).

The radio adaptation of The Dark is Rising has finished. This is something I started with some trepidation, because The Dark is Rising sequence were so influential in my childhood. These books may explain my love of folk-lore, my love of strange traditions, mythology etc...
The adaptation is superb in every way. The script, the acting, the sound design, and the music all come together to create something truly special.
The last episode the #BBC audiodrama version of #TheDarkIsRising by #SusanCooper was released today. Highly highly recommend the whole thing!

Hrm. I devoured Susan Cooper back in the day, but I am not feeling the adaptation of The Dark is Rising on BBC. Feels fierce pedestrian. But sure. I will just reread the buke. Anyway. Checked with my ma, and it occurred to both of us that wintertime folk tales, especially with snow, are more common to English (yes, I know, cooper not English) than Irish fantasy tales. Is this is something specific to English and welsh folk horror tradition? I do not know. #TheDarkIsRising #susancooper

Just listened to episode one of THE DARK IS RISING, Robert Macfarlane’s new adaptation of Susan Cooper’s classic winter fantasy.
If you’ve never lost yourself in her world, this is a great chance to experience the Old Ones for the first time, perfect if you like stories such as THE BOX OF DELIGHTS and THE WEIRDSTONE OF BRISINGAMEN. A fantastic soundscape too so make sure you listen via headphones.

@bensaufley Yeah, that's a bit weird isn't it. I absolutely love her poem The Shortest Day and it is very meaningful to me. And I guess I loved her secondhand because my daughter does.
But obviously I am overdue to read the series directly and am going to rectify that immediately!
