  1. #PSA: this is your periodic reminder that “survival of the fittest” is NOT about physical fitness* – it means “the best fit for the local environment, which allows an organism to survive, reproduce, and pass on its traits to its offspring”

e.g. people who have the genetically inherited disease sickle cell anaemia are generally “less fit” (in a physical fitness / life expectancy sense) than those who don’t have it, but in areas where malaria is endemic, having sickle cell anaemia provides a degree of immunity from the worst symptoms of malaria^ – so people with sickle cell anaemia are “the best fit” (or “the fittest”) for the local environment compared to those who don’t have it 💁‍♀️

  6. @RichardJMurphy Great conversation about the #semantics of all this last weekend, with nephew's Italian wife (at #DownHouse!). She'd been taught about 'survival of the strongest' and we talked about translations and meaning, a well-fitting shoe rather than the biggest or strongest shoe, and then the origins of the chloroplast... #Margulis and #Ostrom trump #Dawkins and #Hardin, if it's a competition between theories (Ikr)

  7. The Pink Panther is pink.

    Snagglepuss is pink.

    Choo-Choo is pink.

    Arlene is pink.

The Cheshire Cat has pink stripes.

These cartoon cats indicate that there was an evolutionary branch of felines that developed the pink characteristic in order to survive and passed it on to their descendants, some of whom remained in the "big cats" family; others were eventually domesticated as pink housecats.

  8. The whole Zuckerberg / Musk cage-fight challenge - whether it's 'real' or not, is hilarious, and I now strongly feel that all Billionaires must be required to do this on pain of all assets being forfeited (to the benefit of the world population).

How do we make this a thing?

  9. Sure there are ways to fix #grade obsession, but if #education continues to be #SurvivalOfTheFittest and not promoting equality through knowledge, changes like this wouldn't even put a dent to the problem. Still, it'd be good that more #feedback are provided to students through continuous formative assessments, but can it happen if teachers are already being stretched thin?

You're not losing because you're not letting ignorance win.

Here, most people I see aren't masking. But I know they're far more likely to get #COVID-19, #TheFlu, or #SRV. And I can tell my fellow masters know it too.

But, what are you gonna do?

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We can't help those that refuse to be helped. In the end they will understand, although probably not be able to name, #Darwin's #SurvivalOfTheFittest
