  1. If you run to the store in a panic over a basic supply chain disruption like a port strike, you learned absolutely nothing from the COVID-19 crisis,

I write about worst-case disasters based on real things (even my upcoming "zombie" book is based on science) because I want people to take seriously the need to prepare for the worst. A few days of supply disruption is far from the worst.

    Self-sufficiency matters!

  3. The prepper subculture has long been associated with the right but, with climate disasters on the rise, shouldn’t we all be thinking about how to better prepare ourselves and our communities?

  4. #Introduction, continued

    I’ve built or rebuilt PCs, servers, cars and homes, and as a result have a ridiculous range of hobbies: #DIY #Woodworking #Remodeling #CarStereo and automotive #Customizing, #Electronics, #HighFidelity, #Audiophile stereo. #Hiking, #Camping, #Renewables #Survivalism. I’m a wannabe #Vegan.

My wife and I have a #Rottweiler, #Koi pond, #Hydroponic #Garden, and love #Cooking #Organic meals together. Meal kit night is our Date Night.

I’m father to 3 amazing women.

  5. @aBirdieOnaWire
I used to follow #Survivalism in the 70s. I lost interest when it occurred to me there was no plan for leaving one’s individual isolated bunker. No society. Why survive, then?

In a sci-fi short story I later read, the protagonist awakens after a nuclear holocaust. Opening line, paraphrased: “I must go out, find my wife, and kill her.” Individuals were on their own, and would die slowly and terribly. The lucky ones were already dead.

  6. Measuring distance by paces is a skill that is both surprisingly useful and could save your life. There's a few key numbers to know but it's pretty easy so now I'm going to teach you:

1 pace is what you may call 2 steps- it is the distance from where one foot leaves the ground to where that same foot returns to the ground. There are various ways to measure your exact pace distance but, generally, for a 6 foot tall man, it's right around 5 feet. If you cannot measure your exact pace length or that just sounds too boring, just use 5 feet. You're not doing exact measurements anyway. 5 feet. A pace is 5 feet. Don't forget that because it's the key to all of this. 5 feet. It's 5 feet in a pace, ya goober!

Using that, we can extrapolate some useful numbers:
    - 1 mile is ~1050 paces. 1000 is close enough. 1.000 miles is 1000 paces.
    - 1/4 Mile is ~45 paces. You can make it 50. IT really doesn't matter. If 30 feet is going to make or break your measurement, you should be using a better tool than paces.
    - 100 feet is ~20 paces.

USE A NOTEPAD, PACE COUNTING BEADS, TIE KNOTS IN A CORD, OR SOMETHING ELSE TO KEEP TRACK. NEVER TRY TO REMEMBER MORE THAN 100 PACES AT A TIME. YOU WILL MESS UP THE COUNT ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE IN A STRESSFUL OR SURVIVAL SITUATION.
Obviously, you can measure your exact pace length and refactor these numbers but, if you can just have these numbers knocking around in your head, they could come in extremely handy for you one day.
