Back in the 80s, all of my delinquent pals in the neighborhood were into a local surf-punk band called the Disturbed. (*not* the corny modern metal band of the same name.) They mostly played house parties, the local lowlife hangout in Trenton, and perhaps the more weirdo-tolerant eating clubs on the Princeton University campus.Their 1987 EP "Totalled Volvo" is a nostalgic favorite, despite the dopey sexism that occasionally wanders into the lyrics.
But the thing I remember about them above all else is the hastily spraypainted "Disturbed" graffiti that either the band or one of their fans attempted to tag a derelict building across the lot from the Princeton Record Exchange with. In huge black letters, it read: "THE DISTU", leading everyone to speculate they'd either run out of paint mid-tag, or that the cops had chased them off before the small time criminal act was finished.
The incomplete monument to these local goofballs lasted DECADES longer than the band itself did. It was finally painted over when the building was re-furbished around fifteen years ago. I still think of "THE DISTU" every time I go to the Record Exchange -- wish I had a photo of it, but this YouTube upload of the "Totalled Volvo" EP will have to suffice.
