CW: Soaps! (Could be more interesting than you think!)
OK, so lately I've come to realize that even ingredients like glycerin can come from palm oil and/or coconuts. With surfactants on almost any cleaning product being derived from palm oil and/or coconuts (List of possible coconut derivatives: https://bloomingskin.com/christys-blog/f/coconut-oil-and-coconut-derived-ingredients#:~:text=1%2C2,Stearate,-You / List of possible palm oil derivatives: https://obvs-skincare.com/blogs/organic-skincare/palm-oil-undercover-a-guide-to-hidden-ingredients#:~:text=Acetic,stearate,-Obvs ) and the associated issues with them (Coconuts: https://investigations.peta.org/monkeys-abused-coconut-milk/ , https://foodispower.org/our-food-choices/steeped-in-injustice-a-look-at-tea-2/#:~:text=Child,production%2E%5B30%5D%29 / Palm oil: https://www.wwf.org.uk/updates/8-things-know-about-palm-oil#:~:text=4,way ), I've started looking for alternatives to cleaning products and goodness, it's been very difficult, but I found a solution I think!
Olive oil soap! Yes, that is right. It's a soap…made from…wait for it…
…olive oil! (OK and some water and maybe some other stuff added, too.)
Commonly known as castile soap, it is actually totally fine for use as body, hair and even as a laundry detergent to wash by hand or in a washing machine with some slight modification ( https://www.thespruce.com/how-to-make-your-own-laundry-detergent-1387952 )!!! So then you have a minimalist cleaning product that does the job just like the others but with severely less impact on the environment (Basically always.) and could even do a BETTER job in some cases…I should've been supporting this since the beginning, it seems…Do note that some still contain coconut or palm oil derivatives, so check the ingredients still (Of course!). Most times they seem to be vegan (As in no parts of non-human animals or something they produce is used and no testing for the olive oil soaps is taking place.), but again, you should check yourself.
And if someone is doubting the efficacy of olive oil soap for cleaning, here are some sources: https://damascussoap.ca/blogs/skin-hair/olive-soap-skin
https://www.olividasoap.com/4-proven-benefits-of-olive-oil-soap/
https://www.theaustralianoliveoilsoap.com.au/blogs/theaoos-journal/does-100-olive-oil-castile-soap-actually-clean
https://www.pureplacid.com/blogs/journal/what-is-olive-oil-soap-and-the-benefits-of-using-it
With people boycotting palm oil so much, it seems like the best solution (Even if boycotting palm oil weren't the case and it were totally fine, the staggering difference in ingredients makes this the better choice for environmental reasons.). #Vegan #Veganism #Palm #Oil #PalmOil #Soap #Soaps #Clean #Cleaning #Cleanliness #Coconut #Coconuts #CoconutOil #Ethics #Ethical #Buy #Purchase #Boycott #Laundry #Detergent #LaundryDetergent #DeepDive #Olive #OliveOil #Castile #Bar #SoapBar #BarOfSoap #Bars #SoapBars #BarsOfSoap #Ingredient #Ingredients #Surfactant #Surfactants #PigtailedMacaque #PigtailedMacaques #Pigtailed #Macaque #Macaques #Child #Labour #ChildLabour #Work #Job #RightsViolation #RightsViolations #Abuse #Violence:vegan: -

Marangoni Bursting With Surfactants
A few years ago, researchers described how an alcohol-water droplet atop an oil bath could pull itself apart through surface tension forces. Dubbed Marangoni bursting, this phenomena has shown up several times since. Here, researchers explore a twist on the behavior by adding surfactants to see how they affect the bursting phenomenon. When a drop settles gently against a pool of the same liquid, it will coalesce. The process is not always a complete one, though; sometimes a smaller droplet breaks away and remains behind (to eventually do its own settling and coalescence). When this happens, it’s known as partial coalescence.
Here, researchers investigate ways to tune partial coalescence, specifically to produce more than a single droplet. To do so, they add surfactants to the oil layer surrounding their water droplet. The surfactants make the rebounding column of water skinnier, which triggers the Rayleigh-Plateau instability that’s necessary to break the column into more than one droplet. Telling my friend about DOC #surfactant in creek. He was worried at first sight but it's not pollution. It is a #natural occurrence. It's an essential part of a healthy & functioning #forest #ecosystem.
Naturally occurring stream foam can be off-white, light tan, or brown. Formed by dissolved organic matter/dissolved #organic carbon (DOC). DOC results from the breakdown of organic debris, tannins & #watershed soils rich in organic materials.

While updating our local RDS guideline and #surfactant treatment, I am looking into the data about the dose increase from 100 to 200mg/kg of poractant. While this higher dose is in the Eu consensus paper fr 2022, it seems the actual data about this is pretty vague and less convincing. Anyone else sharing the same impression about this literature? #NeoMastodon

I use the #surfactant #SDC extensively for #proteomics sample prep. It is compatible with #Trypsin and easily removed. Very occasionally the solution will gel - and I can reverse this fortunately. Today I discovered why this happens:
https://doi.org/10.1021/jp409626s
"The results demonstrate that the gels are formed by intertwined fibrils, which are induced by enormous cycles of NaDC molecules driven by comprehensive noncovalent interactions, especially the hydrogen bonds." -
