Yesterday I needed to pay the dentist for my companion and noticed for the first time there’s a sign on the counter that says: “3% surcharge will be added if pay with credit cards.”
I remember there was a time when stores encouraged customers to pay with credit cards. Since the past year or so I noticed that there are more and more vendors charge a fee if you want to pay with a credit card.
It is even more so now overseas. It might be for a different reason but there will be an additional fee when pay with a foreign credit card. Some countries, like here in the U.S. at some places, will charge a fee for using credit cards no matter what.
I couldn’t help but think if it’s just greed that they are doing so. Who wants to carry a bunch of cash all the time, especially if you are in a foreign country?

There are costs in all transactions. Business discovered that they could charge what they like, so some naturally did.The only realistically enforceable option is to ban all transaction charges.

I am old enough to remember when there were no surcharges on debit and credit cards.
Somehow, businesses didn’t go bankrupt.
Perhaps the owners were smarter then and knew how to calculate the cost of doing business and set prices accordingly.
PS. Weren’t businesses having a whinge recently about the cost of moving cash around?
