Gestern rollte ich meinen Koffer zur Rezeption des Universitätshotels in #Philly, bekleidet mit einem T-Shirt für die „Black Death“ (die Veranstaltung, keine Band) und einer Punkweste mit dem Abbild eines queeren antifaschistischen Märtyrers. Ich hatte mich seit ein paar Tagen nicht rasiert, da werde ich manchmal etwas faul. „Die Reservierung läuft auf Margaret Killjoy“, sagte ich. Ich habe keinen Ausweis, auf dem „Margaret Killjoy“ steht, und ich hatte mich schon darauf eingestellt, erklären zu müssen, dass er mich bei Google nach einem Foto suchen könne, falls nötig. Der Mann zuckte nicht mit der Wimper, er überprüfte meinen Ausweis nicht, und schon hatte ich meine Schlüssel und war auf dem Weg in mein Zimmer.
Klasse ist eine seltsame Sache. Ich habe viel Zeit in Philly verbracht, nicht viel anders gekleidet und viel schlechter behandelt, aber jetzt war ich Gast der #Universität. Jetzt bin ich eine Schriftstellerin.
Ich bin nur für einen Tag in der Stadt, nur um vor einigen Studenten an der Universität zu präsentieren und vorzulesen, und eines der seltsamsten Dinge am Dasein als Performerin ist, dass ich vier Tage auf Reisen verbringen werde, um fünfzehn Minuten vorzulesen und vielleicht weitere sechzig Minuten zu reden. Gestern Abend habe ich die ARC (die Vorabausgabe) von Avalon, Rise von Madeline #Ffitch zu Ende gelesen, einen Roman über #Antifaschisten in einer Kleinstadt in den #Appalachen, die versuchen, sich gegen eine wachsende Bedrohung durch weiße #Supremacisten in ihrem Landkreis zu organisieren. Es ist fantastisch. Ich kann es gar nicht genug empfehlen. Ich weiß nicht, ob Madeline jemals eine Figur geschrieben hat, die nicht zutiefst fehlerhaft und damit zutiefst menschlich ist, und dieses Buch ist ein Ensemble aus Versagern, das deutlich macht, dass der #Antifaschismus voller schrecklicher Menschen ist (genau wie überall sonst), aber dennoch eindeutig die richtige Seite ist.
(Merkt man, dass ich gerade daran arbeite, ihr einen Klappentext zu schreiben?)
Das Buch ist vor allem eine Geschichte über Menschen, über mehrere Generationen von Menschen, über den Kampf, der seit Jahrhunderten andauert. Aber es ist auch eine Insider-Kritik an allem, was uns unerträglich macht, wie zum Beispiel die Weißen, die so besessen von akademischen Interpretationen des #Antirassismus sind, dass sie ihre Freundschaften mit Schwarzen versauen. Wo die Antifaschisten versagen, ist dort, wo sie Nuancen aus der Diskussion herausglätten (oder sich so sehr um Nuancen bemühen, dass sie es den Faschisten einfach ermöglichen, sich zu organisieren).
Und es gibt darin eine Einstellung, auf die eine Figur immer wieder zurückkommt: #Nostalgie ist faschistisch.

Ich weiß nicht, ob Madeline jemals eine Figur geschrieben hat, die nicht zutiefst fehlerhaft und damit zutiefst menschlich ist, und dieses Buch ist ein Ensemble aus Versagern, das deutlich macht, dass der #Antifaschismus voller schrecklicher Menschen ist (genau wie überall sonst), aber dennoch eindeutig die richtige Seite ist.

Das Buch ist vor allem eine Geschichte über Menschen, über mehrere Generationen von Menschen, über den Kampf, der seit Jahrhunderten andauert. Aber es ist auch eine Insider-Kritik an allem, was uns unerträglich macht, wie zum Beispiel die Weißen, die so besessen von akademischen Interpretationen des #Antirassismus sind, dass sie ihre Freundschaften mit Schwarzen versauen. Wo die Antifaschisten versagen, ist dort, wo sie Nuancen aus der Diskussion herausglätten (oder sich so sehr um Nuancen bemühen, dass sie es den Faschisten einfach ermöglichen, sich zu organisieren).
Und es gibt darin eine Einstellung, auf die eine Figur immer wieder zurückkommt: #Nostalgie ist faschistisch.

I am horrified at how so many people don't even bother to question or interrupt obviously warped rhetoric targeting people who are a bit different in ANY way. It is mainly flowing from US funded bigots and journalists working for billionaire-owned corporate media etc. but taps into deep seated ignorance and insecure need to feel superior to others.
We can do better than follow the USA down the shit-chute of supremacism. We've had so many deaths and genocides which began with such targeting, and ought to be wise to it, and know that the stereotyping rapidly spread to ALL types of person.
If you are a journalist, politicians, influencer or media personality spreading the hate, shame on you.
If you are a writer of any kind, it is time to be conscious, wiser than previous generations. Think twice before you spell out dystopian ways to harm others, because they WILL be imitated. Just expose the ways already in the public domain.
