  1. A newspaper from the #GreenParty this morning about the #GreaterManchester #GMMayor by-election next week is full of fibs.

The headline reads "Shock new poll: Greens can win Mayor". A graph shows the Greens pulling ahead of #UKLabour.

The poll cited is by Find Out Now from 13th July. Find Out Now are a member of the British Polling Council, but I couldn't find the raw data on their website. I did however find the results of the poll on a polling aggregator, where it puts Labour at 38% to the Greens on 22%. That is not suggesting that the Greens can win the Mayoralty - it puts them firmly second, within margin of error above Reform.

The poll even asks about #SupplementaryVote preferences. Assuming the Greens come second, Labour still wins 2:1.

I like most of the Greens' policies and their overall vibe; I voted for them in the locals and #GortonAndDenton. But I wish they'd stop pulling this shit.

  3. CW: UK Politics; Greater Manchester Mayoral Election

The upcoming by-election for the Mayor of Greater Manchester will be under the Supplementary Vote, aka "AV for people who can't count to three".

You get one vote for two candidates; if your primary candidate gets eliminated then your vote transfers to your supplementary choice.

This means that you can, for example, vote Green or another left-wing party, then put Labour as your supplementary choice to reduce the risk of Reform winning.

This is why preference voting is important - it reduces the risk of vote splitting, and means people don't have to vote tactically. So you can actually vote for who you want to win. It's as important as proportional representation in a voting system.

  5. @Tattered And Burnham lied about PR.

He claims that #AlternativeVote / #SupplementaryVote is a firm of proportional representation. Nonsense! AV is not proportional. Political scientists agree about that.

This is such basic stuff that only an eejit would make the error. Or a liar.

I go with the latter option.

  7. #AndyBurnham does NOT support #ProportionalRepresentation #PR. 😡

Burnham supports #SupplementaryVote, also known as #AlternativeVote #AV, which is NOT a proportional system

And he will NOT scrap the current #FirstPastThePost #FPTP before the next general election #GE2029. So #ReformUK could win a huge overall majority on 30% of votes.

    That makes a vote for #Burnham pointiess. He's a #Blairite who won't even introduce fair votes. 😡

There's no point to Burnham. Reject him, #Makerfield!

  9. All to tackle the huge, urgent crisis of… "just 171 allegations of in-person voter fraud at a polling station from 2014 to 2019 of which only three led to a conviction".

Transparent #VoterSuppression. Combined with scrapping the #SupplementaryVote for #MayoralElections (purely to try to split the anti-Tory vote and prevent Tory candidates losing on second preferences), one of the most transparent attacks on the democratic process I've seen from any government in my lifetime.
