Why you should care about Dani's Race?
Dani's Race is a pretty to look at, open-world game. Is this a good enough reason to care about it? No. It's not. There are plenty of good looking games out there. And Dani's Race is not even close to some of them. Dani's Race is a Libre "GTA Clone". Okay... so what? It's not the only one. And it is not even that GTA-like anyway. Yes, you can get in and out of cars. Yes, you have an open world. Yes, the levels are structured into missions. But so what? Why should you give a damn? What's so special about this game in particular? Well...
Let's start with a square.

Is the @[email protected] version on Steam "official," and should I expect it to be updated to version 0.7 in the nearish future?
I had been using the Steam version for cloud saves, but if it isn't being updated I'll probably switch to the flatpak and manually back up my game data.

I'm really enjoying the new gameplay mechanics for Super Tux 0.7, it was already quite a polished game but now it feels even more full and interesting.

Screenshot: "SuperTux Visits Edmonton" [year 2007] running in SuperTux 0.7.X git-latest [year 2026] under Laclin [my Linux distro].
Note for players and developers:
Despite the major revamp in SuperTux 0.7.X, you can run a number of worlds and/or levels that date back as far as 0.3.3 in the new program.
I host two ZIP files that can be used to install some of the worlds and/or levels:
ZIP #1: https://minetest.org/misc/stux-added-levels.zip
ZIP #2: https://minetest.org/misc/stux-bgim-033.zip
To install the extra worlds and/or levels under Linux, proceed as follows:
# Set these parameters appropriately: # TOPDIR = folder that contains "share/games/supertux2/" # ZIPDIR = folder that contains the two ZIP files TOPDIR=/somewhere/ ZIPDIR=/somewhere-else/ set -e cd $TOPDIR/share/games/supertux2/ mkdir -p levels images/background cd levels unzip -qo $ZIPDIR/stux-added-levels.zip mv Dr_Small_s_Domain/*.jpg ../images/background/ cd ../images/background/ unzip -qo $ZIPDIR/stux-bgim-033.zip
The new worlds and/or levels will show up under Bonus Levels -> User Contrib Levels.
Notes for developers:
A build from git will get you the latest SuperTux 0.7.X snapshot. To create a snapshot source tarball under Linux, execute the following "bash" script:
#!/bin/bash set -e rm -fr supertux git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/SuperTux/supertux.git cd supertux pushd data/images/engine/menu/ cp -p logo.png logo_dev.png popd git submodule update --init --recursive rm -fr .git && mkdir .git cd .. tar zcf supertux-git.tar.gz supertux/ rm -fr supertux ls -l supertux-git.tar.gz
This script creates a source tarball that works but is of reasonable size [about 300 MB as opposed to about 1 GB].
The "cp -p" line removes a distracting "Dev" warning from the program's main screen.
There don't seem to be many major new dependencies in SuperTux 0.7.X relative to 0.6.X. I gather that the package needs "physfs" 3 as opposed to 1 or 2 now.
