So, Nike developed a “super shoe” that includes a carbon fiber plate embedded in the foam sole. This makes runners perform seemingly 4% better in some cases. The inclusion of the plate is controversial. The model name is “vaporfly”
EXCEPT
The plate actually doesn't do that, this is a common misconception due to marketing but all the studies for the past 5y have proven that the improvement comes from the new foams and not the carbon plate, some super shoes don't use plates, some plates are not necessary carbon
Does that mean the plate is useless ? Absolutely not, without it the shoes would be a complete wobbly mess because the new foams are very soft/squishy for the most part and shoes manufacturer have inflated the stack of their shoes to an absurd degree which is part of why they are instable and needed something to being stability/rigidity for runners. The carbon plate helps to do that, or a nylon plate, or carbon infused rods, there are different ways to do this but the raw performance enhancement comes from the ultra light new bouncy foams (although bouncy is not always good, as the bounce has to be redirected in the proper direction for it to work)
