I think for today's VGM Wednesday, we should all be sharing some fun Mario music.

Good morning and happy Mario Day (i.e. Mar 10).
Mario has starred in so many games over the years.
My favorite Mario platformer, honestly, is probably Super Mario Land 2, followed by Super Mario Bros or SMB 3 as close seconds. Hard for me to decide which I like better, as each of them have special places in my heart for different reasons.
But Super Mario Land 2 is such a fun platformer and it introduced the world to Wario.

I can't get into *anything* at the moment. My PS5 and Series X have been sat dormant for months and my Steamdeck has turned into a #CloneHero machine.
I am spending a fair bit more time playing on the Anbernic though. I finished #SuperMarioLand2 the other day, and had a blast whilst doing so.
I'm wondering if maybe I should just accept that nothing is going to take right now and move my attention onto my big #LordOfTheRings re-read that I've got planned for next year?
That or....maybe it's time to finally jump back in with another #Soulslike. Looking at you #LordsOfTheFallen.

Playing through some #SuperMarioLand2 right now.
Never played this one before, although I'm fairly sure I had it on my Gameboy when I was a kid.
As you'd expect from a game of it's era, it's fairly simple but it's got that mario charm and feel that's just so damn effective at bringing you in that you barely notice they it looks like relative shit.
Music is a hoot too.

So, on my quest to boost my game completions for this year, I recently beat #SuperMarioLand2
It was a game from my childhood that I didn't actually beat until I was probably in my mid teens. The game itself isn't too challenging. In fact, it is a somewhat cosy #Mario game until you reach the final stage Wario's Castle. It's quite a steep jump in difficulty!
Other than that, Mario Land 2 is a weird game in the best possible way.
In terms of #RetroAchievements, it isn't too difficult to master, though the speedrun challenges can be a tiny bit frustrating. Especially the Wario's Castle one, ideally requiring a tiny bit of setup before you attempt each run.
I am glad to add this to my mastery list as this stands as one of my favourite Mario games of all time.

#SuperMarioBrosWonder seems to have taken a bunch of influence from #SuperMarioLand2 from the #GameBoy, with the map screen with a captured, now evil castle in the middle, surrounded by worlds you need to get keys (coins/royal seeds) to enter the end castle.
The swimming in space levels, and a few of the gel ones also feels like call backs, as does having birds, hippos, etc, as enemies alongside goombas and koopa troopa's.

2. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (Game Boy via Nintendo Switch Online)
A fun little Mario game that felt great to play, although I NEVER would have been able to beat without save states and rewind. Anyone who did so without that, my hat's off to ya. Not much else to say about it other than I appreciated its brevity and that Wario sprite is the gift that keeps on giving.

The levels are fun. They are challenging, but entertaining. They provide different, creative creatures. Some similar to previous Mario villains, some wildly different.
Also, this is where we are introduced to one of the greatest characters in all of #Nintendo history: Wario.
