  1. CW: Superman (2025) Spoilers

I watched the new Superman movie finally. It was... okay. :soft_owo: I loved the casting-- David Corenswet makes a good idealistic boy scout, Rachel Brosnahan (hello Mrs Maisel???) makes a great overly analytical, cynical journalist, the Justice Gang were super fun (Mr Terrific was such a great surprise), and Nicholas Holt as Lex was one of the all-time best villains I've seen in a superhero movie. I also really loved watching Hawk Girl drop Netanyahu out of the sky.

That said, I see what people mean about it being messy. There was a lot of really awkward, heavy-handed exposition for things that didn't really need it. They under-explained things in Clark's backstory, but then also got really heavy-handed with things like what Kryptonite is, or repeatedly hammering home just how much he needed a yellow sun. Ultraman being a clone but it's just Superman with black hair was really silly in an un-fun way. It took the wind entirely out of the sails of him being a threat when it's just Superman vs emo-yet-somehow-even-doofier evil Spiderman.

I also really really didn't like that Lara and Jor-El were evil colonizer sex pests. Established comic book canon aside, I really think it undercut the messaging of the movie. The movie isn't subtle about Superman being an illegal alien, and how he's a human (read: citizen) even if he is one. I feel like it really undoes the message that xenophobia is unjustified when, in this case, the movie really justifies Earth's/Lex's xenophobia. In my mind, the movie perpetuates the idea that other cultures are backwards, and the reason why Superman is good is because he assimilated to the American Way™. I dunno, that plot point and especially that they used the word "harem" to describe him forcefully taking a bunch of wives really put me off. It felt, to me, like it was justifying bigotry and ethnocentrism.

Overall I really liked it, but it probably could've used another draft and a few tweaks here or there. :meowshrug: It would've been nice to have the implications of some things more thought out, and maybe reduce some of the tonal yo-yoing even if that's a James Gunn staple.

  15. @jamesgunn.bsky.social has a wonderful little scene in #superman2025 as a commentary on modern social media as a whole, and maybe as a commentary on far-right fakenews-producing teenagers in the US. It's hilarious and I was laughing hard in the cinema ... ;-) www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7Ce...

  18. Superman (2025)

Buena trama, buenos efectos, excelente casting, excelentes vibes.

  22. CW: Spoilers: Superman (2025)

We went to watch Superman yesterday. The movie was very well put together and pulled me in all the way through, which is quite an achievement since I'm not the biggest fan of the superhero genre in movies.

I appreciated the fact that there was literally no gore involved even though there were plenty of violent encounters. I think the twist was quite cleverly done, and by articles I've read, it can be tracked right back to old comic canon - so that's cool as well.

The casting choices felt very good, I believed every single character and they fell very naturally into their roles.

Also yes, the movie is cheesy, but done in such a.. *romantic* way, that I didn't dislike that at all.

Could've been more gay though. The only thing that was missing for me, lmao.

  23. SUPERMAN (2025)
