Getting ready to start my Solo RPG session based on my SuperCity24 world building art challenge from January. The plan is to share my game journaling of drawing and dice rolling each week.

My character: J Box K is a superhero that is anthropomorphic jukebox, a magical construct.

I have started to Figure out the character attributes and answer tough questions like... does he eat food, sleep and poop.

2/2 Thoughts on SuperCity24

This year, 2024 I drew the size of a trading card (2.5" x 3.5") on watercolor paper from Diaso in SF. Drawn in Micron pen and tinted with watercolor.

These drawings weight a lot less then 2023's sketchbook (1 oz vs 11 oz) so should be easier to lug around, but have a lot less details. Using the cards in a game should be 'seeds' to develop the world through solo RPG play.

1/2 Thoughts on SuperCity24

This is the 2nd year that I did an art challenge in Jan to worldbuild for a solo RPG game.

In 2023 I had a 8.5" x 5.5" sketchbook and did fairly elaborate drawings. I included possible characters and history. It was really fun to use in my game session, but the sketchbook was too heavy to lug around (w/ a journal as well), and looking up details the father along the game went was a challenge.

...Having a hi-tech company and a world class university also brings trouble: governments, tech ceo's, mad scientists, aliens, organized crime, and ... Supervillains. But Heathburge also has colorful defenders dedicate to helping those in need.

Now a colorful NEW figure has appeared out of nowhere, shaking up this small city along the Jacqueline River.

Here are the 31 cards that represent the city of Heathburge, CA.

A town made successful, originally from the Heath Textile Company. The owner Helena Heath was a (mostly) beloved figure who tried to do right by her employees.

Besides the university, the town is still known for textiles, but a high-tech version with Star Sail, inc.

It's farm country and they grow olives and flowers and of course have services for city folks coming out to spend a day in the country.

Here is area 4 of the city of Heathberg, Skyhills. An area that is named to sound like heaven, but only for those who can afford it.

Skyhill's secure, private spaces where the residence can avoid 80+% of the population. Walled homes, cool/fancy stores, and possibly a way to shield oneself in a cloak of respectability.

POSTING a day early, since I like how it came out.

PROMPT: The 7th day is always an area onto itself.

A SUPERHERO HQ that has set-up a gift shop and food stand for the fans who make the pilgrimage to this futuristic building. will my PC hero want to join this group if possible, has their marketing gone to their head. I will have to find out.

Here is an street with a swanky pet salon, art gallery, and a door with a shield over it. Which one is full of secrets? Don't know, have not played the game yet (but the dice and I don't always agree.)

A walled community of McMansions. A place where everyone drives a golf cart around and there is golf, tennis, swimming and of bar with food. This is for the wealthy who are not rich enough for their own compound (see 4.1). It probably was advertised as having 'small town charm'.

SuperCity24 - Location 4.3 - Area 4/4

The prompt was 'connection to another location/different area' so we have a retail store for high-tech fabric manufacturer Star Sail Inc. This is part of one of the those exclusive malls that has really cool stuff, but also can feel sterile and flat. The crepe stand sells a cheese only crepe for $18 us.

SuperCity24 - Area 4/4

This area of HeathBurg is the one the pc is least comfortable in, one of wealth and power.

Construction company Wollf inc. provided this public art piece. It's modern, dramatic, but also hard and cold. There is always a security guard making sure 'vagrants' don't ruin this park of concrete and metal.

I imagine 'tron' neon colors, maybe blue.

Warm and inviting it is not.

For this last full week of the SuperCity24 challenge there is only one area left, one of Power and Privilege. This an area that the hero is least comfortable in.

The first prompt is some play forbidden, and what is more forbidden then a mansion/compound.

SuperCity24 - Area 3: City Center

These seven cards represent the center of Heathberg, CA, a fictional city for a future soloRPG session.

The City Center is where commerce, government, education come together. This small city is full of contrasting ideas, stories on what it is.

This 3rd area is one the game PC feels less comfortable in. This following week it will be an even less inviting place.

SuperCity24 - Day 21 - Location 3-7 City Center

Heath University is my Mini Area for this week. A place where things seem to stay the same and seem to change, and at the same time. The school was built by the textile barons of the past and in recent years, Star Sail Inc. has been sponsoring a lot of new building.

Tomorrow is the start of area 4, the most out-of-place for my PC, J-Box K.

SuperCity24 - Day 20 - Location 3-6 City Center

The Star Sail corporation has a showcase pavilion- a corporate showcase for education, promotion and development. Half of it is full of demonstrations and displays, perfect for a school group or casual visitor. The other half is development. And all of it is promotion.

SuperCity24 - Day 17 - Location 3-3 City Center

The 3rd week area is one more foreign to the hero, and for J Box K it's the bustling city center. One prompt is someplace has a desire to visit, but feels 'forbidden'. And for a superhero who is a magic construct made from a jukebox it's PINN the retro pinball night club. It's in the cool area of city center with converted lofts and art galleries.

SuperCity24 - Day 15 - Location 3-1

This week it's the City Center, an area of commerce, education and government.

This weeks first prompt is some place elusive, so here is a restaurant that even the wealthy of Heathburg can't get into (with out months of waiting). It's Lu's Edge Cafe, a fusion restaurant on the edge of the river near the wealthy part of town. It's minimalist modern with front door security.

SuperCity24 - like a superhero comic, I need to retcon some details.

Welcome to Heathburg (a city with strong woven history?), named for the founding family. Helena Heath was the owner of the first large textile factories in the city and the family continues on today in positions of power.

The city is ever expandings with only the surrounding hills and waterways to slow it down.

SuperCity24 Week Two

Welcome to Yardage Point, the industrial area of my city. Where once there was traditional textile factories have now been replaced by ones that make High-Tech fabric. There are community spaces like Founders Park, low income housing, and a struggling museum.

Plenty of areas for adventure to happen.

Now to give the city a name and finally draw a profile of my purposed hero.

SuperCity24 Week Two - day 14 - location 2.7 (Yardage Point)

This is Star Sail Inc. a maker of high tech fabric and the main industry in the city.
The company is known for its tech fabrics for racing sailboats, but now has contracts with the military and NASA as well. A supervillain might want the secrets and/or the fabric and who knows how up-and-up the company is.

SuperCity24 Week Two - day 13 - location 2.6 (Yardage Point)

Founders park was built in the cities heyday when the city founders wanted to share the prosperity of the city with it's residents with this large park.

It is not to scale, BTW.

There's a bandstand, playground, sports field, duck pond, a statue of a mysterious superhero who helped the city, and a boardwalk area for the farmers market.

Excited to start 2024 with an personal world building art challenge, Super City 24 (see hashtag below). This is the start of a thread of all my posts, pinned to the top.

GOAL: To build a city of 4 neighborhoods/areas, 31 locations in January 2024 and then use in a solo RPG game. I did #city23 this year and found it super rewarding to make something then putting it to use.
