  1. The farewell concerts of Eppu Normaali, the best-selling Finnish rock band of all time, are dominating the national news this weekend. The last of the three sold-out stadium concerts is currently being recorded by YLE, the Finnish national broadcasting company, and the spectacle will be shown on the TV1 channel on the Finnish independence day in December.

Eppu Normaali started out as a punk band in the late 1970s, and early in their career, they were witty and fun. I liked them quite a bit back in the day, up until the mid- or late 1980s, but to a large extent lost interest after that, although their music continued to be enjoyed by new generations of fans.

Here's a video clip of them performing live in the early days, from Aki and Mika Kaurismäki's documentary film "Saimaa-ilmiö":

Eppu Normaali: Puhtoinen lähiöni / Let's See Action (1981)
    youtube.com/watch?v=-v_MyKNLzAs

"Puhtoinen lähiöni" was one of their early hits, a sarcastic description of suburban life, and "Let's See Action" was of course originally recorded by the Who.

  2. It's mostly forgotten now, but for a brief period during the mid-sixties, my old hometown Hämeenlinna was known as "the Liverpool of Finland". The most popular and also most original musical artist to come out of the town was Irwin Goodman, but there were quite a few others as well.

One of these acts was a beat group called Eddy & the Lightnings. The flip side of their second single was a version of a Clint Ballard Jr. composition called "You're No Good", with Finnish-language lyrics by Matti Sortila and Orvokki Itä (which was a pseudonym for the profilic old-school songwriter Reino Helismaa).

Eddy & the Lightnings: Olet paha (1964)
    youtube.com/watch?v=zB2HB_yuuas

The video clip is great fun, as it was filmed on location in Hämeenlinna, apparently during the winter of 1964/65, as there is snow on the ground and the group members seem to be freezing.

The highlights include a ride on an escalator, which may have been the first in town, and playing on the wing of Hanssin Jukka, an old DC-2 airplane, which was located next to the bus station and used as cafeteria at the time.

  6. A couple of years later, Timo Jämsen (together with the Strangers) recorded another popular Finnish-language cover version:

Timo Jämsen & the Strangers: Yyterin Twist (1963)
    youtube.com/watch?v=hv64tgZzIVo

The tune had been originally recorded by a French group, Les Chats Sauvages:

  7. For this week's #MondayCovers I've chosen Timo Jämsen's excellent Finnish-language version of "Flaming Star":

    Timo Jämsen: Kohtalon tähti (1961)
    youtube.com/watch?v=_tQP66AbdTU

Written by Sid Wayne and Sherman Edwards, "Flaming Star" was the title song for one of Elvis Presley's better movies.

  10. Another pick for this week's #JukeboxFridayNight theme, #PunkRock. Here's a Finnish #ProtoPunk classic by the group Virtanen, with lead singer Moog Konttinen and guitarist Veltto Virtanen.

    Virtanen: Elektroninen Xtaasi ("Iltatähti", 30.4.1975)
    youtube.com/watch?v=DiFQ_sDVJHA

Veltto Virtanen later went on to become a member of the Finnish Parliament, but his political career is another (and almost equally zany) story: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veltto_V

  12. This week's #JukeboxFridayNight theme is #PunkRock. Here's one of the Finnish punk pioneers, Pelle Miljoona, and one of his best-known early songs, the title of which roughly translates to "Violence and substance abuse". At the time, he was obviously a man with a message!
