A hacker news commentor pointed out that my website says I'd be adding photos of my Sun SPARC servers "soon", and yet two years later there are none (rude!! /jk).

A fresh belt can help with a stuck CD-ROM transport. 
Still trying to get this sun ultra 5 to boot off install medium - turns out it will support DVD drives, but will only boot from ones that support 512 block transfers (which I now gather mine does not). At least I got the old CD drive working.

It lives! The #SunSPARC Ultra 1 Creator I got for free off #Craigslist (and accompanying #Nokia #terminal) work well enough to (after some hiccups) boot all the way to a login prompt!

Now if only I knew the root password... But I have a plan for that too.
