This is gonna make me cry but I'm gonna listen to it anyway. #RIP #NeilSedaka. I regret never having seen you live and in person. #SunriseSunset

Did a bit of experimentation… there's constant debate about DST here in SE Queensland, with people who moved north from southern states saying "we should have it" and those of us who have lived here for decades saying "no we shouldn't".
The prime argument revolves around the sunrise/sunset times, which do drift between summer and winter. I argue that the time-zone offset should reflect the longitude, and unless Brisbane suddenly shifts an hour to the east, it should remain at +10 hours from UTC. We can still shift alarm clocks and opening hours, but for time-sync purposes, leave the time-zone offset as-is.
The question in my mind, how much does the sunrise/sunset time change? I have the apparatus for measuring this. The solar server cluster here has a high-side current shunt on the solar panel array, measuring voltage and current.
Voltage is a good proxy for first light/last light, but lousy at detecting when the system is actually producing meaningful power.
Power production (voltage × current) is a good indicator that there is light directly shining on the panels (and not incidental light from the moon for example). However, it's lousy at first-light/last-light, because the MPPT controller does not try extracting power when the open-circuit voltage drops below 8V.
Put them together though, and I have what I need to objectively measure sunrise/sunset times.
It's a 12V nominal system consisting of 3×350W panels. So I've set my thresholds:
- 2V open-circuit voltage: first-light / last-light detection (the solar controller emits a small amount of current when charging at night from mains, this presents as a ~1.2V measurement from the panels)
- 60W power threshold: sunrise / sunset detectionI'll leave it there, and see what the data tells me over the next 9 months, see what the trend looks like then. #Solar #DST #SunriseSunset
