This new children’s book (in 🇩🇪) features 48 beautiful pages filled with cool facts about the Sun! On 2 of them, MPS-scientist Achim Gandorfer and MPS-engineer Bianca Grauf speak about our balloon mission #SunriseIII and tell what they love about our star. Enjoy! #WASISTWAS #TesloffVerlag #Sunrise3

In today’s #ChalkTalk at @forumwissengoe , #mpsgoettingen scientist Achim Gandorfer took us on a journey through centuries of solar research and observations, ending with the adventureous flight of the balloon borne solar observatory @sunrise3 . Thanks for an amazing show!

Stunning images of the journey of the Sunrise III telescope taken by IRIS-2 a video and imaging instrument built by a Spanish team of enthusiastic amateur astronomers, engineers, and technicians.
The balloon-borne telescope traveled from Sweden to Canada more than 6,500 km at an altitude of about 40 km in six days.

With the @sunrise3 flight in July this year overwhelmingly successful and the data recovered and now being calibrated and reduced, there will be a lot of analysis to do in order to turn those measurements into exciting science results! Want to join the effort as a PhD student? Then apply to our #IMPRS by October 1:

This seems to be the landing site, and it looks like forest indeed. So far so good? #sunrise3 #SunriseIII #Sunrise_III

Mission 740N, the NASA balloon transporting onboard the SUNRISE III Solar Telescope has been terminated at 18:20 UTC today.
Payload is probably on the ground now in a spot located east of Fort Good Hope, a charter community in the Sahtu Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada.
Total flight time was 6 days and 15 hours.

As of as 16:00 UTC on July 16th, 2024 this is the location of the two balloons in flight of the NASA balloon campaign in ESRANGE.
BIG60 is chasing down SUNRISE III despite the difference of almost three days between launches. That's due to the speed the BIG60 gained flying at 156 kft against the 120 kft average altitude of SUNRISE III.
The Solar telescope mission will be terminated in the next few hours.

Sunrise III safely over land again, and still at altitude so far

Well, this should get interesting very soon ...

As of 4:30 UTC on July 14, 2024 this is the location of the three NASA stratospheric balloons currently in flight.
A recovery team from the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility is currently waiting in the city of Yellowknife to fly to the landing spots of the payloads and balloons in the next few days.

In the same time frame, the other balloon in flight (the XL-CALIBUR mission) also experienced a loss of altitude but it was half of the loss experienced by SUNRISE III.
We must consider too that XL-CALIBUR is flying at higher latitude and a little higher altitude (due to balloon size) and could be less affected by the cooling effect of lower-angle solar radiation.
Nothing conclusive yet.
