  1. Played this #originalsong in a local cafe recently and some kind folks in the audience *insisted* that I must record and post it.

Maybe my own little emotional crisis in a local grocery store will resonate–this is my original song about “Crying In the Kimberton Whole Foods."

(KWF is a local, family-owned independent chain, and no relation to the Amazon-owned behemoth. Buy local, cry local!)

  2. This week's #SundaySong doesn't sound exactly how I would have liked, but the point isn't to be perfect, the point is to be brave and put things out there. This is "Hospital" by Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers, performed on a distorted #UBass with some digital mellotron added in.

  3. Haven't done a Sunday Song in a while, but here's one to close out the year: The Raconteurs' "You Don't Understand Me," rendered on #ElectricUke through an amp modeler pedal.

  4. Okay, it's no longer Sunday, but I forgot to post my #SundaySong, so here it is – a lowkey acoustic version of The Only Ones' "Another Girl, Another Planet." Have always loved this song but never thought it could work on a #uke until hearing an acoustic version in the movie "London Town" – which is also highly recommended.

  5. Another cover almost no one will know but that has stuck with me for decades—Jane Wiedlin’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” Still learning how to sing this one but liked this enough to share it anyway.

  6. This week's #SundaySong is Amanda Palmer’s “Ukulele Anthem,” one of the songs that reignited my interest in the #ukulele. It’s fun to sing but I can’t get quite relaxed with it. It’s rough, there are mistakes, etc., and that’s why I need to just put these takes out there. Play your ukulele!

  7. Last week I got all up in my head. For this week's #SundaySong, I kept it very, very simple. This is "I Scare Myself," written by Dan Hicks (but more like the Thomas Dolby version).

  8. Can't believe I've never posted a version of Cracker's "Big Dipper" before. This was one I struggled with mightily when first learning to play and sing, but for whatever reason it enchants me and I come back to it again and again. Non-minimalist approach here, with some layering in #AbletonLive. Sorry, the reverb is dripping. Maybe it'll be dry by next week.

  9. A fellow open mic'er asked if I could accompany him on "Almost Blue," Elvis Costello's try at creating a jazz standard. Oh, them chords! Well, that encouraged me to get way, way out of my comfort zone, try to approximate some chords I'd never even heard of before, and sing a song I didn't think I could sing.

So, here's a try at "Almost Blue."

  10. A super busy weekend, so I chose a song that needed a certain low energy approach – here's a cover of Florence + The Machine's "Long and Lost."

Just me and the piano, no post-production.

  11. A little Brecht and Weill for your Sunday morning – an anti-war song written specifically for Lotte Lenya to record and have broadcast into Germany – this is "The Ballad of the Soldier's Wife."

  12. Busy weekend so I found a song I recorded quite a few months ago but was still happy with – in fact, I've even posted it before, but I always love singing this one. It's Elle Cordova's (formerly Reina del Cid) "Whiskey Down." Just me and electronic keys.

  13. Hadn't thought of this song in years and then I suddenly heard it played in three different places, which is SO weird. The version I knew was by John Martyn, on one of those great KCRW samplers, Morning Becomes Eclectic. But it turns out his version was a cover of a song by #portishead. He changed it, I changed it, here it is, just me and a somewhat fuzzed-out U-Bass: "Glory Box."

  14. This is "A New Name for Everything," by The Weakerthans.

Given how often I perform this song, I can't believe I've never posted it as a Sunday Song before. Maybe it's because I keep changing how I do it (and which instruments I use). This week it's a choppy uke (with a little #uke drone added in #abletonlive).

  15. Summer's still here, so here's Jonathan Richman's "That Summer Feeling" – just me and my #KalaUBass. Still getting used to the new strings, so it took me about 25 takes.

  16. This week's #SundaySong is Reina del Cid's "What I'm Losing," a song about life on the road and priorities. I usually do this on piano but have been quite taken with it on #ukulele lately. Added in some #KalaUBass because that's what I do.

  17. This week's #SundaySong is a lush, orchestrated pop masterpiece from the '80s rendered by an old guy with a #ukulele. I use the tools I have. I love this song, and could not ever have imagined I'd be able to perform it. This is ABC's "All Of My Heart"

  18. This week's #SundaySong is an old Soft Cell lament, "Say Hello Wave Goodbye." Have always loved this song, could never imagine I'd have the ability to perform it. Vocals and keys live as shown, and once again I went to my trusty #KalaUBass to provide a little something extra, which 90% of people won't hear because there's no bass to be found through phone or laptop speakers.

  19. *Kazoo Solo Alert!!*
I think this is the first time I've posted one of my own songs as a #SundaySong – Inspired by an intersection I found on a bike ride, it's one I haven't performed a lot. Turns out it was waiting for a punk #ukulele approach. Here's "Church and Reformed," with live vox and #uke, #KalaUBass and an absolutely soaring #kazoo solo added in.

  20. #SundaySongs time! Going back to my roots as a #FlorenceAndTheMachine cover act*, this is one of my favorite songs, "Ship To Wreck."

Keys and vocals live as shown, added in some #KalaUBass and digital harmonus in #AbletonLive.

  21. An unusual song for me in that it's just genuinely sweet – I used to sing this to my kids at bedtime, but had forgotten about until recently. We knew this #SesameStreet song from #ShawnColvin's version on "Elmopalooza," and my kids called this "the Ernie song," because "I Don't Want To Live On The Moon" is a lot of words.

Piano, vocals, added my #YamahaBass in #Ableton
