  1. The first time I got to experience a full #MarkRothko exhibition, I genuinely wept. Also the 2d, and 3rd. The emotional intensity of his abstracts never fails to grip me, and I will always need a moment to collect myself afterward, and I will not really be interested in looking at anything else for a while.
And somehow, Dar Williams wrote a song about exactly that. This is "Mark Rothko Song." Here's my #coversong:

  2. All the cool kids are singing Dylan again these days, right? Here's "Things Have Changed," which I seem to play differently every time I play it.

  3. Played this #originalsong in a local cafe recently and some kind folks in the audience *insisted* that I must record and post it.

Maybe my own little emotional crisis in a local grocery store will resonate–this is my original song about “Crying In the Kimberton Whole Foods."

(KWF is a local, family-owned independent chain, and no relation to the Amazon-owned behemoth. Buy local, cry local!)

  4. This week's #SundaySong doesn't sound exactly how I would have liked, but the point isn't to be perfect, the point is to be brave and put things out there. This is "Hospital" by Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers, performed on a distorted #UBass with some digital mellotron added in.

  5. This week's #SundaySong definitely challenged my limited piano and vocal abilities, but it's such a compelling, depressing song I went for it anyway. Recorded this in balmier weather, and decided it's good enough to post. Here's Amanda Palmer's "The Bed Song."

  6. A cover of Jefferson Airplane's Today, done on electric uke with chorus, U-bass, and a little asalato in the mix somewhere. One of my favorite songs to sing, and yet I haven't done it as a #sundaysong before!

  7. Instead of a #SundaySong, I guess I did a #SundayPoem – I did a poem about my life 35 years ago as a legislative assistant. Was I ever that young? Just spoken word (boy, do I prefer my singing voice), electric slide ukulele, and #KalaUBass.

  8. Haven't done a Sunday Song in a while, but here's one to close out the year: The Raconteurs' "You Don't Understand Me," rendered on #ElectricUke through an amp modeler pedal.

  9. Okay, it's no longer Sunday, but I forgot to post my #SundaySong, so here it is – a lowkey acoustic version of The Only Ones' "Another Girl, Another Planet." Have always loved this song but never thought it could work on a #uke until hearing an acoustic version in the movie "London Town" – which is also highly recommended.

  11. This week's #SundaySong is Amanda Palmer’s “Ukulele Anthem,” one of the songs that reignited my interest in the #ukulele. It’s fun to sing but I can’t get quite relaxed with it. It’s rough, there are mistakes, etc., and that’s why I need to just put these takes out there. Play your ukulele!

  13. Last week I got all up in my head. For this week's #SundaySong, I kept it very, very simple. This is "I Scare Myself," written by Dan Hicks (but more like the Thomas Dolby version).

  14. Can't believe I've never posted a version of Cracker's "Big Dipper" before. This was one I struggled with mightily when first learning to play and sing, but for whatever reason it enchants me and I come back to it again and again. Non-minimalist approach here, with some layering in #AbletonLive. Sorry, the reverb is dripping. Maybe it'll be dry by next week.

  15. My #SundaySong is going up on Saturday this week for reasons. This is a stripped down version of a Kurt Weill/Ogden Nash song told from the point of view of a statue of Venus that has come to life in the modern era. From the #musical "One Touch of Venus," this is "I'm A Stranger Here Myself."

  16. A fellow open mic'er asked if I could accompany him on "Almost Blue," Elvis Costello's try at creating a jazz standard. Oh, them chords! Well, that encouraged me to get way, way out of my comfort zone, try to approximate some chords I'd never even heard of before, and sing a song I didn't think I could sing.

So, here's a try at "Almost Blue."

  21. Busy weekend so I found a song I recorded quite a few months ago but was still happy with – in fact, I've even posted it before, but I always love singing this one. It's Elle Cordova's (formerly Reina del Cid) "Whiskey Down." Just me and electronic keys.

  22. Most weeks I post a quick little #SundaySong to my Instagram and FB accounts, and sometimes I remember to share them here as well. The point is to put it out there, whether it's "good," finished or not. This didn't end up quite as I wanted it to, and it's a bit slower than I wanted, but it's a cover of Country Joe & The Fish's "Flying High."

  24. Every week I record and post a #SundaySong – as a super late blooming performer, just putting myself out there is as big a challenge as anything. This is my cover of #Hooverphonic's "Mad About You."

  25. This week's #SundaySong is Blondie's "Dreaming," which I've lately been trying a few different ways. This started with just me and my trusty U-Bass, and this morning I decided to add some electric uke. Some really electric uke.

As someone who's only been playing for a few years, a real late bloomer, it's still incredible to me that I can just DO this.

  26. Hadn't thought of this song in years and then I suddenly heard it played in three different places, which is SO weird. The version I knew was by John Martyn, on one of those great KCRW samplers, Morning Becomes Eclectic. But it turns out his version was a cover of a song by #portishead. He changed it, I changed it, here it is, just me and a somewhat fuzzed-out U-Bass: "Glory Box."

  27. Forgot to post my #SundaySong on Sunday – that's how the weekend went. This is a simple #piano and #bass cover of a song by Gin Blossoms, "As Long As It Matters." No one seems to know it, everyone seems to like it.

  28. This is "A New Name for Everything," by The Weakerthans.

Given how often I perform this song, I can't believe I've never posted it as a Sunday Song before. Maybe it's because I keep changing how I do it (and which instruments I use). This week it's a choppy uke (with a little #uke drone added in #abletonlive).

  29. This week's #SundaySong was inspired by some first-time performers at #OpenMicNight who thought nothing of tackling a #MazzyStar song on their first outing – something that for some reason I thought daunting. But then I took up "Flowers in December" on the #ukulele, and whaddaya know? Not too bad, I think.

  30. This week's #SundaySong is a very low-fi, low-tech rendering of The Velvet Underground's "After Hours." One take, with mistakes, recorded directly with an iPhone, 'cause I'm on vacation and this was what I could do. I started out doing this as a bass-only song, which works pretty well, but the uke chords are pretty nice, too, so that's what you get this time around.

  31. Feeling very low energy today, so pulled up something I'd already recorded and tried to shape it up. The result is this week's #SundaySong, an old one from the '90s called "Superman's Song" by Crash Test Dummies.

  33. Sunday, so #SundaySong time! Suddenly rediscovered Gin Blossoms because they're so fun to play bass to, and decided to try singing a couple of their songs. So here's "Mrs. Rita," drenched in amateur #AbletonLive production and with some video synching issues I could explain, but won't. Thanks to everyone who listens.

Keys and pad are #midi, vocals are multiply overlain, only the #KalaUBass is real.

  34. I've done this #SundaySong before, I'll probably do it again, because it never comes out the way I want it to. Here's Goffin-Goldberg's "Audience For My Pain," which I learned from The Swanky Modes, being Sam Moore and Junior Walker.

  35. Took last Sunday off from social media, but now I'm back with a bit of a novelty #SundaySong that no one remembers by Don McLean. This is "Everybody Loves Me, Baby," with a couple of minor lyric changes. Recorded #keys and #vocals live as shown, added some #KalaUBass in #AbletonLive.

  36. This week's #SundaySong is a #LeonRussell tune I've done since I started singing just a few years ago – hard to believe this was once a *real* stretch for my voice. Annoying how you have to practice to get better at things.

Recorded vocals and keys live as shown, and added my #YamahaBass in #AbletonLive (headphones or real speakers sound best).

This is "Stranger In A Strange Land."

  37. This week's #SundaySong is one of the very few that I can sing while playing bass – which I did at two open mics this week just for fun. But when it came time to record, I tracked vocals and bass separately, so I could optimize them separately. Then I added a little B3 drone, because. This is Fleetwood Mac's version of a Little Willie John song, "Need Your Love So Bad."

  38. This week's #SundaySong is a spooky little piece by Cracker, "Dr. Bernice." I don't know why, I just love singing this one.

  39. This week's #SundaySong is Reina del Cid's "What I'm Losing," a song about life on the road and priorities. I usually do this on piano but have been quite taken with it on #ukulele lately. Added in some #KalaUBass because that's what I do.

  40. This week's #SundaySong is a lush, orchestrated pop masterpiece from the '80s rendered by an old guy with a #ukulele. I use the tools I have. I love this song, and could not ever have imagined I'd be able to perform it. This is ABC's "All Of My Heart"

  41. This week's #SundaySong is one you'll probably recognize, eventually. It's from the demo version of one of the most famous songs of the rock era; the verses are completely different, and then that old familiar chorus kicks in. I went to the effort to add #KalaUBass to the mix, but you'll only hear it with headphones or good speakers.

I had a real *moment* singing this at #OpenMicNight this week. Never was more surprised.

  42. This week's #SundaySong is an old Soft Cell lament, "Say Hello Wave Goodbye." Have always loved this song, could never imagine I'd have the ability to perform it. Vocals and keys live as shown, and once again I went to my trusty #KalaUBass to provide a little something extra, which 90% of people won't hear because there's no bass to be found through phone or laptop speakers.

I think this is the first time I've posted one of my own songs as a #SundaySong – Inspired by an intersection I found on a bike ride, it's one I haven't performed a lot. Turns out it was waiting for a punk #ukulele approach. Here's "Church and Reformed," with live vox and #uke, #KalaUBass and an absolutely soaring #kazoo solo added in.
