This is the Marble Boat, a pavilion on a lake within the Summer Palace in Beijing. It's actually wood, painted to look like stone, and dates from the late 19th century, replacing a previous boat-shaped pavilion burnt down during the Second Opium War by the British.

A combination #ThrowBackThursday and #TravelThursday post looking back to 2008 and a visit to the Summer Palace in Beijing during our pre-cruise honeymoon stay in China. This is the 18th century Jade Belt Bridge on Kunming Lake, designed to resemble southern Chinese countryside bridges but with an exaggerated height to allow the Qianlong Emperor's boat to pass under.

This is still one of my favorite winter pictures. In Beijing during the pandemic, one of the few places you were allowed to go to in public were there many parks. So when it snowed, I asked a friend what was open and would look good in the snow. He was a local tour guide I had been teaching photography to and said the Summer Palace was open. So, hoped in a cab (no subway at that time) and met him.

Learned some fun snow animation last weekend while attending the 5th Photoshop Summit. Really like the subtle technique that Corey Barker taught. Had fun adding the snow animation to this shot I took almost 4 years ago at the Summer Palace in Beijing. Snow was coming down but since it was during the day, hard to capture in a shot.

It appears that #StandingStoneSunday is an actual thing so here's a Taihu Stone in the Summer Palace in #Beijing from a visit there in 2008. The Taihu Stones and their distinctive shapes are formed by the action of pebbles constantly rubbing on larger rocks through rushing water action creating holes in the larger structure, and were considered lucky.
