  1. [#SummerNews #7] In February 2022, NASA and ESA aligned the #ParkerSolar and #SolarOrbiter probes to determine the origin of the acceleration of the #SolarWind as it moves away from the #Sun.

The onboard instruments measured the speed, temperature and density of the solar wind, as well as the amount of energy stored in the #MagneticField. This revealed that the dissipated magnetic energy was fuelling acceleration and slowing plasma cooling.

  2. [#SummerNews #6] On August 21, the #ChemCam instrument aboard the #Curiosity rover fired its millionth laser shot at #Mars! One million shots in twelve years!

The target of this millionth shot: a fragment of #rock named Royce Lakes, which was broken by the #rover itself when it rolled over it. The operators of this shot: French teams from IRAP and @CNES.

  3. [#SummerNews #4] How can #research in #astronomy be adapted to climate issues? How to make it compatible with the #ParisAgreements?

Several IRAP researchers (including @jknodlseder ) have quantified the #CarbonFootprint of astronomical observatories and #SpaceMissions. The results are indisputable: emissions are following an upward trend, largely dominated by space missions. How can this tendency be reversed?

Researchers have put forward several ideas: irap.omp.eu/en/2024/08/when-th
