One of the sumptuous summer flavors from my youth was homemade lemon ice cream, made at my grandmother's. She put the ingredients, including juice from like a dozen fresh lemons, into the 1-gallon manual freezer.
My brother and I would add ice and salt around the metal container and crank that that handle like our life depended on it.
This summer, I'm trying to replicate the tart flavor in a modern automatic machine. Last try (shown here) was too sweet, so I've got a new recipe for this afternoon.
I'll get it right or go into a sugar coma trying!!
