Warum? --#Sulla ist der einzige mir bekannte Diktator, der freiwillig zurücktrat.
Seine Maseenmorde waren jedoch ebenfalls beispielhaft, auch wenn ihn mache ob seiner Reformen auch als "letzten Republikaner" des #RömischenImperiums bezeichneten.

Each escalation broke rules, further radicalized life. The end: proscriptions, civil war, collapse of the Republic.

For decades, he has been one of the key Republican scientific cornerstones that paved the way for #RonaldReagan and ultimately #TFG.

How would #UShistory be different w/o these two impactful presidents?

I agree with everything you say, including "consequences." Oh, getting his fav toys taken away, smashed even, will drive him insane. His biz reputation torn to pieces? Maybe even worse.

If he hadn't been #POTUS, I'd be happy about the likely outcome.

But him currently being the most likely next Pres in 2025...no deal. Maximum punishment.

He will be behaving like Dictator #Sulla, if he gets re-elected, puny, vindictive but without...

If my assumption is true, which I have no reason to doubt, this would be his get-out-of-jail card, yes.

A serious flaw in the #US Constitution.
It's been a longer time that I focused on it, but in the #RomanRepublic, that would not have been possible. They always had a counterbalance, e.g. a 2nd #consul, other #triumvirs, other #tribunes, etc. Where it went wrong: #dictator (#Sulla), but a #POTUS isn’t that.
Now, it is too late to fix that.

This could be solved relatively easily.

Back to the roots:
In the #RomanRepublic, elected state officials were only shielded from lawsuits while they held "#imperium."
After their service ended, they were fair game for prosecution.

Sounds bad?
No, not quite so: this served as a very important corrective before #Dictator #Sulla's rule, as all officials knew that their power was temporal and temporary.

Been sick all week. But I managed to finish reading Mike Duncan’s Storm Before the Storm. It’s a fascinating look at the troubles of the end of the Roman Republic. The violent breakdown of the government process and rise of populist leaders and factionalism.

A good read. Highly recommended.

A student favorite among the horror was an anecdote I shared from #plutarch (life of sulla §13) in which a cavorting #sulla sends an amount of pepper instead of grain, which was requested by a starving Athenian population under his siege (87/6 BCE). #greek pun not withstanding (purós, -oû “wheat” vs. pûr, purós “fire”), the cruelty of the joke amounts to “you want to eat? Here’s some treasure—eat that [knowing full well that it will burn on the way down]” #histodons #classics #romanhistory

Students in my #romanhistory class were horrified by #sulla but they questioned whether he was really as bad as the #ancient #historians say. I replied that the #historiography paints a specific sort of megalomania; he’s someone who thought he was smarter than everyone, who comes in a breaks something he’s “saving” all in the name of a personal quest for power.
