I don't exactly hate the 48 team format, because it has produced surprises that are reason enough to justify the expansion.
Nevertheless, there is something... a bit wrong if we end up with a round of 32 that has Morocco matched up against Oranje... and (no offense or disrespect) Switzerland and Algeria. By having some group winners matching up with runners up and others with one of the 8 third place teams, you create imbalance in the brackets.
You either need 64 nations divided into 16 groups with the top two going through... (and seeding) -- and group winners face runners up
.. or 44 nations, where all but the worst out of 11 3rd placed teams go through, and the 10/11 first placed teams are matched with them, and 10/11 runners up meet each other, with only one group winner meeting a number 2.
48 creates an unbalanced mess.
