    • The NASA Connection: Antarctica serves as a "dress rehearsal" for space exploration. The high-pressure, chemically isolated environments of its subglacial lakes provide a direct parallel to the subsurface oceans of Jupiter’s moon Europa, making the continent the ultimate laboratory for testing theories on extraterrestrial life.

  2. @setiinstitute A great total view towards Europa is visible here.#Jupiter's #moon is subject to multiple #scientificinterests. One of them is represented by the NASA #EuropaClipper #Mission that launched in October 14, 2024. The #spaceprobe has different purposes. Besides the superficial ice crust it i.a. collects information about the #subsurface #ocean. Europa is one candidate for possible #extraterrestriallife.

  4. Life does not end at the #sediment-#water-interface, it keep going down and down and down (less so on land). There is a #diversity continuum, and some of those #subsurface #microbial communities can be rather diverse.

"In the upper 80 cm of playa sediments, microbial communities were dominated by #Firmicutes. Below 200 cm, a different microbial community was discovered, dominated by #Actinobacteria... this community might have colonized the soil 19,000 years ago, before being buried by playa deposits"
