Classic racer: Stunt Car Racer now playable at 50 FPS

The classic Stunt Car Racer previously had the issue that the screen was only refreshed 12 times per second - regardless of how much processing power the computer had. Removing this limitation was long considered too complex, as the timing of all in-game processes - the speed of the cars, crashes, collisions, etc. - was directly tied to the number of frames generated.

I tried the Atari ST version of one my all-time favourite games, Stunt Car Racer. Some have suggested that it is the best version but I'm unconvinced.

There might be a marginal gain in framerate - maybe 1 or 2 fps but the sound is dreadful compared with the Amiga.

The 8-bit versions were all good but the wireframe track graphics leave a lot on the table. Seeing the homebrew conversions to machines like the Beeb and, most recently the Plus 4, is an impressive technical feat but isn't going to pull me away from the 16 bit versions.

#StuntCarRacer was the first #Amiga game I ever saw in person. It made me feel sick - sick because of the wild jumps and drops, and sick because I didn't own an Amiga. So I was jumping for joy when the lesser 8-bits got ports...

And, honestly, it's an 80's miracle they run so well.

The #Amstrad port is a little slow, but colourful. The #Spectrum is gaudy yellow, and runs a little better. But it's the #C64 version that shines, feeling remarkably close to the Amiga original.
