I’ve recenlty made a repayment (from savings) to the ATO against my #StudentDebt.
About 10 years ago, I got it into my head to go back to UNI. I worked for 2 years on a Master of Translation (Adv) at ANU, and I enjoyed every minute of it only to come unstuck at the very end. With less than a semester of work to do I hit a wall. Well several walls in fact.
The first was that I ran out of courses to study within the School and didn’t want to undertake something I wasn’t interested in.
The Second was finding out that my thesis could not be the translation and publication of a book I wanted to do, it had to be something which would advance translation research to qualify. I did find another way to do that and my idea was to research whether “Livres de Gares” (aka airport novels) were purposely written for translation and whether these had similar linguistic characteristics which could be computationally determined.
My Supervisor and I thought it would be a good project and I genuinely felt enthused about it. That is until I dug deeper into it. It required me to fork off into Digital humanities to obtain expertise in linguistic computation; coding, scripting, parsing and tagging text as well as applied statistics. The more I looked into it, the more the whole thing looked like a multidisciplinary project. I was defeated (allowed myself to be defeated?) by the amount of work and more importantly, the cost in terms of stress and finance. I couldn’t afford either.
I’ve just had a look at my #HECS-HELP statement… only $35,000 or so to go…

*Inside cybernetics, ANU-style*
If this is any indication of how the ANU is run in terms of courses offered, then questions need to be asked and some full and transparant answers are required. What is it about #Universtities these days, it’s just one clusterfuck ofter another at the moment…
“The School of Cybernetics is an anomaly in the higher education landscape. The course fees are advertised at $39,925, although it’s unclear how many students, past or present, have paid the full amount. It is rumoured that almost every student has been granted a generous scholarship, although an ANU spokesperson declined to provide numbers.
Highly confidential documents seen by this masthead indicate that very few of the 28.2 equivalent full-time students in 2023 paid the sticker price. That year, total revenue from fees, philanthropy, and research income was just $258,000 for the entire school – or $9,000 a student.
Expenses attributed to the School of Cybernetics, however, were $7 million. The documents equate that to $237,000 a student, leaving the university with $228,000 per student to be found from elsewhere to cover the cost of teaching its tiny, privileged cohort.
The ANU spokeswoman declined to answer how many cybernetics students had been awarded scholarships, the value of those scholarships, or where the money to fund them came from, other than that scholarships were generally funded by “industry and general revenue”.
Sack all councils and review how appointments are made.

Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’ is bringing a big set of student loan changes https://www.nbcnews.com/news/education/trump-big-beautiful-bill-student-loan-changes-rcna350126 “I would have hoped that I would be making a decent living on the education that I paid such a dear price for,” Correa, now 57, said. “But I was sold a dream. It feels like now, if you are a normal, average person just trying to make it, you’re not going to.”

New report by research institute BC Policy Solutions calls for greater funding for higher education in British Columbia. It highlights the cuts to staffing and programs that have happened recently and warns that treating education as a commodity funded by student debt deepens inequalities:
"The post-secondary sector performs particularly poorly for low-income, racialized, Indigenous and first-generation students."

Before now, ALL #GraduateStudents could borrow up to the full cost of attendance, which conservative lawmakers blamed for high program costs & high #StudentDebt.
In the fall, the #Education Dept & a committee of #HigherEducation “experts” negotiated the details of the #loan caps, but the terms sparked a backlash over the exclusion of some professions from the higher loan limits, including nursing, physical therapy & social work.

Here’s How You Can Challenge Wage Garnishment for Defaulted Student Loans
The Trump administration announced that this week it will start forcibly collecting money from student loan debtors. -
Hi folks! My friend Aseel only has a few more hours to pay her fees for the semester so she can take her exams. She needs less than $300 more, and she has a donor willing to match donations to help get her to that goal. Please help my friend in Palestine seek a better future!

Not that this is any solution to the US #studentDebt crisis, but if you are facing garnishment of wages in January, you may be able to file an objection. What happens after that probably depends a lot on what state you live in and what judge you get.
It might at least be worth a try. I'm not a lawyer, and even if I were, I'm wouldn't be your personal lawyer. Not legal advice and all that. But I do see people talking about this.

@DemocracyMattersALot More of MAGA’s war on low and middle income Americans. Many w/ student loans are seniors whose Social Security checks get garnished. We make payments for decades while loans increase due to high compounding interest and only tiny fractions of payments applied to principal. A cruel racket in a country where only the rich can afford education. #StudentDebt #StudentLoans #education #college

Nurse Wendy Brindley Hines, a longtime Trump supporter with a Master’s degree, has spoken out against the White House's recent omission of nursing and other health care professions from the list of approved "professional" degree programs. This change, part of the administration’s reclassification under the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," could affect nurses’ and health workers’ eligibility for student aid and debt programs—potentially impacting those with significant student debt, including herself. Hines urged the Trump administration to reconsider, emphasizing the critical role of health professionals in caring for the nation and questioning the long-term consequences of excluding vital healthcare fields from such classifications. Will this push lead to policy revisions that support healthcare workers’ educational needs?
