As a member of the European Parliament, I recently spoke about the importance of maintaining strong institutions in Spain. Some politicians have been trying to weaken these institutions by advocating for the elimination of the crime of sedition. However, this would be a mistake, as it is important to protect our democracy and the rule of law.
In fact, there is no harmonization of criminal laws across European countries, so each nation has its own unique legal system. Spain needs the crime of sedition to protect against nationalists who threaten to disrupt the peaceful coexistence of citizens. Other European countries also have laws in place to defend against threats to their democracies.
Therefore, I urge my fellow lawmakers to reject any attempts to weaken our institutions and instead work together to strengthen our democracy and uphold the rule of law. #ProtectDemocracy #StrongInstitutions #NoToSedition #RuleOfLaw
