#strife — Public Fediverse posts

#SeasOfStrife is such a fun game but such a hard sale, because of its weird licensing. See, when Mark Major licensed #Strife to Amigo, they mistranslated the rules into german making #TexasShowdown its own thing. It was then licensed to Rio Grande who used the german version instead of the original (why?? lol). Lautapelit then translated this version instead of the english, too. Then, when I contacted Lautapelit about this, they told me its fine, because they added the correct rules in Finnish 🤣

Me as a kid: #Strife is such a cool game, it's got crossbow with electric bolts!

Me today: now that I understand it, Strife is such a cool game. However, the crossbow sucks.

You can guess what my favorite #Doom and #Heretic weapons are.

Since my PRs are taking a while to merge, if someone wanted to play #CrispyStrife with improved gamepad controls (one where selecting a dialog option doesn't attack the NPC):

Yes, I've been #DoomCoding.

#games #Strife

Working on the code of #Strife is definitely DoomCoding… (and yes, I kinda regret starting that.)

Wanted to tackle #Strife next, but looks like gamepad support in #CrispyDoom is far from complete.

A quotation from Joseph Addison

LUCIUS: From hence, let fierce contending nations know,
What dire effects from civil discord flow.

Joseph Addison (1672-1719) English essayist, poet, statesman
Cato, Act 5, sc. 4, l. 106ff (1713)

A quotation from Teddy Roosevelt

Let us therefore boldly face the life of strife, resolute to do our duty well and manfully; resolute to uphold righteousness by deed and by word; resolute to be both honest and brave, to serve high ideals, yet to use practical methods. Above all, let us shrink from no strife, moral or physical, within or without the nation, provided we are certain that the strife is justified, for it is only through strife, through hard and dangerous endeavor, that we shall ultimately win the goal of true national greatness.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) American politician, statesman, conservationist, writer, US President (1901–1909)
Speech (1899-04-10), “The Strenuous Life,” Hamilton Club, Chicago

A quotation from Euripides

CHORUS: The fiercest anger of all, the most incurable
is that which rages in the place of dearest love.

[ΚΥΚΛΩΨ: Δεινή τις ὀργὴ καὶ δυσίατος πέλει,
   ὅταν φίλοι φίλοισι συμβάλωσ᾽ ἔριν.]

Euripides (485?-406? BC) Greek tragic dramatist
Medea [Μήδεια], l. 520ff (431 BC) [tr. Vellacott (1963)]

We're 2/3 of the way through #DOSember! I still have at least one non-gaming project I want to get done before the end of the month, but I've gotta catch up on streaming too.

Planning on #GoingLive in about half an hour to play some #Strife! This is a first-person RPG made with the Doom engine, released in 1996 after a troubled production. It flopped in the market and may have been the death knell for its publisher Velocity.

1/2 Unchecked power at any level of #Governance puts the descent into a festering end state of #Corruption , #Strife and #Violence on rails. We've seen this in history on global scales and now it's here domestically with an extremely unfortunate Trifecta in the #Executive branch, #SCOTUS as primary accelerant and a barely there but again etreme toxic majority in Congress. Coincidentally with this we have the rise of #AI as destabilizing wedge wielded by zero accountability corporate entities-

A quotation from Euripides

CHORUS:Fools who fain would carve a name
Of honour in the fields of fame,
Valiant in the press of war,
Men and fighters — fools they are!
How shall death and wounds and shame
   Heal the world’s distrated life?
   Vain endeavour! Strife of strife
Misbegotten bringeth no release,
Nor by conquest shall man conquer peace.

Euripides (485?-406? BC) Greek tragic dramatist
Helen [Ἑλένη], l. 1151ff, Stasimon 1, Antistrophe 2 (412 BC) [tr. Sheppard (1925)]

As you ford life's rivers, keep your knees bent and face upstream so you can better see what's coming at you. But as you crawl life's ductworks, face downwind and keep your mouth shut lest you suck in dust-bunnies.
