This looks like a lawn but the entire thing is a mat of minuscule mesembryanthemums like in the second picture. I don't know the species but these are slow growing and not free flowering but for a couple weeks in spring they're covered with tiny pink and white pinstriped blooms shown in the third picture (that's a different plant same species)

I saw this monster pile of aeonium on my walk just now near 52nd Street and Hoover. It's at least eight feet across the long way and more than two feet high. How long did it take this thing to grow??

This big-ass succulent near 50th Street and Kansas Ave in Los Angeles looks like a cactus but it's actually some kind of Euphorbia. It's possible to see this any time because euphorbias don't have spines like cactuses, but the difference is especially clear when they're flowering, which this sweetie pie is doing and how!
Euphorbia flowers are really distinct and so are cactus flowers and they look nothing like each other. And there were so many bees!.
