  1. @RupertReynolds

If you make these kinds of choices based on "what someone says", you're doing it wrong. No one is suggesting that.

I am (slowly) moving from Debian to Devuan for all the obvious and well-documented problems with systemd. No need to recite that stuff in detail.

Observing that Ubuntu is going all-in on autoslop, and being able to connect the dots and project into the future, moving from Ubuntu to literally anything else (that isn't on the same problematic path) is also pretty darn obvious.

But throwing up a nihilist hypothetical strawman to try to convince others it's not worth trying to fix problems? That is GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY LIFE territory. Plonk.

I thought it was clear that I was criticizing the quality of their engineering design. Maybe not, though?

    Otherwise, nice #strawman.

  11. Cory Doctorow, a fellow #Canadian, writes a lot of interesting stuff. I agree with his positions on many things, but not all. For example, I'm about ten thousand percent behind his opposition to anti-circumvention laws; I was one of the thousands of Canadians who wrote to the government opposing the introduction of the law many years ago.

However, his blog on Thursday, staking out the position that opposition to "AI" (LLM) is just geeky #purity culture is somewhere between "flat-out wrong" and "disingenuous at best".

My position against #LLM #slop everywhere is both because of #ethical #concerns and practical ones. There does not exist an LLM right now that was built and trained ethically; they are all statistical plagiarism machines, and speaking as someone whose #prose and #code has been plagiarized by every single one of them, that pisses me off, royally.

That's a show-stopper for me, but even if it wasn't, the #practical concerns - that the output is #untrustworthy, that the #references can't be checked, that the #code is #insecure and #unmaintainable, that the #licensing status is unclear, that it's a #copyright violation - are *also* enough to rule out #LLMs at present.

He then presents a #strawman argument - all tech is fruit of the poisoned tree, the #transistor was invented by a racist, etc. But William Shockley is not designing or manufacturing any of the transistors / #ICs I use today.

    So, @doctorow - I gotta say I disagree. And that's fine.

"rien de positif" c'est plus compliqué que ça.
Play to lose sur un plan pour gagner tout un monde de possibles à explorer. Tant qu'on verra faire taire l'autre et avoir l'air cool comme les 2 mesures du Bien et du Beau, on ne comprendra pas que même dans le Play to lose, on choisit toujours le *meilleur* coup. S'il s'agissait vraiment de faire le choix le plus mauvais, ce serait ridicule #strawman.
Le personnage peut ne pas être d'accord. Il n'existe pas.

  17. #Politics

#DiaperDon & his #MAGA minions are creating & attempting to enforce so many #StrawMan theories & actions.

Where do they find the energy to come up with all this BS ??? 🙄

It's exhausting just trying to keep up & to make logical arguments against them but I guess that's their strategy.

Even if some of their BS theories & actions don't work, others will fly under the radar or get SCOTUS or Congressional approval. ☹️

I'm calling this the "throw as much 💩 against the wall & see what sticks" approach to government administration.

  18. @Lassielmr Is this a #strawman day? 😞

I didn't say that Judaism and Zioism are the same. I did say that Zionism preys on Jewish communities.

Yes, there are non-Jewish zionists. The USA has a vast pool of Christian Zionists. But recruits to the IDF are overwhelmingly Jewish.

  19. Straw Man Fallacy:
They twist your words into an absurd version so they can "win" an argument.

    You: “We need clean air.”

Them: “Oh, so you want communism?”

    It’s not debate — it’s deflection. #StrawMan #FascistPlaybook

Analysts say global financial markets are entering a euphoric but potentially dangerous speculative phase. Such phases are typically…

  23. @memeorandum It's curious karma that he was pushed out of the race when he was originally forced down our throats to begin with. History will discuss this and how he wasn't actually wanted as president to begin with #Strawman
