❗ Model Reveals Hidden Warming Layer Above Stratocumulus Clouds❗
Understanding #stratocumulus #clouds is key to predicting #ClimateSensitivity. MPI-M scientist Kenneth Chan and his colleagues discovered a previously unresolved "W-Layer," a thin (just 5 meters!) warming layer above stratocumulus cloud tops. ⛅ It was previously unknown because it is too thin for most simulations to resolve! Their discovery reveals a blind spot in current stratocumulus simulations. 🔍

Äskön kotiin palatessani huomasin, että tyypillisesti tylsän harmaa Stratocumulus stratiformis (Kumpukerrospilvi, kerrosmainen) olikin ottanut yllättäen vähän muunnoksen lacunosus (~kennomainen) näköä pintaan. Voisi siinä tulkita olevan myös hieman lisäosan asperitas (~tyrskyinen) piirteitä, mutta siitä en ole niin varma.

An "oldie" (2019 paper) but a real baddie - the danger of #clouds, particularly #stratocumulus clouds in the #subtropics, disappearing (!), is real, and really frightening. According to the most accurate (and afaik only) modeling done about this, if #CO2 reaches 1200 ppm - which it is predicted to do by mainstream #climate models in 100 years - a #TippingPoint will be crossed, stratocumulus clouds will disappear, and average #temperatures will rise by 10C in the subtropics and 8C in the #tropics. In other words, #Earth, as a livable planet for most species. will be done and dusted.

Fascinating evidence shows that as a result of #GlobalWarming, #cirrus #clouds will increase in height and enhance the warming effect, whilst lower #stratocumulus #cloud (which normally cools the planet) will dissipate, causing further warming.
There is also evidence that decreasing #pollution will reduce the aerosols needed for stratocumulus to form, enhancing warming even further. -

Repito: no soy un experto, acabo de empezar a aprender a reconocer nubes, seguramente me equivoque reconociendo algunas, pero para eso precisamente lo hago. Si sabes de nubes y crees que me he equivocado, avísame, por favor. =)
