@ColinTheMathmo No. I need to watch that. I've just spent too much time thinking about aerospace alloys and now I'm late for a talk I'm giving at Institute of Physics. Yikes. #StrangeIce

@bestdeadends Oh gorgeous light pillars. I've not seen them in a very very long time! Thank you! #StrangeIce
-
-11°C here in Sweden and ice particles in the ground level atmosphere are doing strange things optically.
These vertical light pillars were obvious from a distance with the naked eye. If you think they are just lens flare in photo 1, check photo 2 from behind the same building.
I have never noticed what I imagine are sun pillars off electric floodlights before.
As ever, witnessing #StrangeIce requires that I annoy @sellathechemist -

It seems that President Trump's continuing war on climate science is going to adversely affect my own "#Arctic citizen science" work:
https://GreatWhiteCon.info/2025/05/trumps-climate-cuts-affect-the-nsidc/
"I frequently post a summary of the Arctic section of the United States’ National Snow and Ice Data Center’s monthly review of the current state of the #cryosphere.
However, this month I have some additional bad news to report. According to a May 6th 'Level of Service Update for Data Products' from the #NSIDC:
'Effective May 5, 2025, #NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (#NCEI) will decommission its snow and ice data products from the Coasts, Oceans, and Geophysics Science Division (#COGS).
As a result, the level of services for affected products below will be reduced to Basic—meaning they will remain accessible but may not be actively maintained, updated, or fully supported.
Sea Ice Index...
If you rely on these products in your work, research, education, or planning, we invite you to share your story at [email protected]. Your input can help us demonstrate the importance of these data sets and advocate for future support.'
If you are a resident of the US you may also wish to contact your local friendly neighbourhood politician(s) about the matter?"

Just spotted something amazing in the sky while crossing the street - the top of the 22˚ halo along with a part of the very rare Parry arc above it. So a double rainbow sitting rather blindingly above the sun.
I've only seen the Parry arc once before. What a treat for a Monday morning. #StrangeIce -
I'm giving my talk "Strange Ice" in Brussels at the British School of Brussels next Thu 27 March. Yes, it's about chemistry, but it's also about psychology, literature, authoritarianism, and especially climate change and what we do about it.
The talk is in the suburb of Tervuren, home of the Royal Museum of Central Africa. No link at all with that, but if you come you'll get to see a performing monkey.
It's free - buy you need to book: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdzNZxN3yt6xPG_vXPdnxSea-Q2kyFeEU_UaCZspiV34MjpPw/viewform

@markmccaughrean #StrangeIce springs eternal!
I'm always surprised by how often one can see Iridescent clouds , but you need very very dark glasses most of the time because one tends to see them within a fairly small angle from the sun which is pretty blinding. -
@ZLabe May I use that image in my #StrangeIce talk for schools tomorrow afternoon?
-
@eliocamp @neonbubble oh… had missed this. #StrangeIce
-
@eliocamp oh no!!! One of my favourite sites!!! It’s replacement is poo. Can it be recovered with the internet archive and hosted somewhere? #StrangeIce
-
On my wayt to Manchester to give my #chemistry and #climatechange talk #StrangeIce. And hugely looking forward to having a cup of something with @stecks later as we plot a cunning plot for a cool maths and critical thinking event to try out at Cheltenham Science Festival next year.

Friday night in Lausanne there is a performance of Désalpe, an "Ode to Lost Winter for four Alpenhorns and three bodies of the plains": Théatre Jorat.
It "recounts the distress of the tribes and guilds of the Alps… as the snow they used to call white gold disappears, their businesses collapse along with the foundation of their existence. They had seen some warning signs but were confident in the power of their snow machines and blinded by their profits… "

Went to a deeply moving exhibition in Lausanne today about Glaciers - Un Monde en Mouvement (A moving world).
Small and beautifully laid out. The recordings of the sounds of the Aletschgletscher played in a dark room are a real highlight.Swiss glaciers have lost 41.3 cubic km of their volume since I was born - that 46%.
If you were born in 2006 they've lost 30% of their volume in that time.
Neither you nor I will ever see them again.
#Strangeice -
A great example of shifting baselines. Drip drip drip…
-
@drmikepj Whoa. There’s an awful lot there! I’m so envious. Upper tangential arc( and a hint of Parry?) and the outer halo too, 44 degrees(?). In fact I will talk about haloes briefly in my #StrangeIce talk at Cheltenham Science Festival in a week’s time. May I use your photo?

@dillyd Just as with the snow, if the light passes through enough material, the red light is attenuated just enough to give you that beautiful blue colour. It's a gorgeous effect and when I go skiing I always look for it if the snow is deep enough to plunge a ski pole into it - and lo! the blue is there. No one else notices it. It's mine. Just like those sundogs that few others ever see. #Strangeice
-
@markmccaughrean You can never post enough pictures of glorious #StrangeIce phenomena. Can we have more?
-
@markmccaughrean #StrangeIce is always gorgeous. It's one of the joys of cycling in the city that I get to see one every couple of weeks. Glorious ephemeral things, and like sun dogs, and other ice crystal phenomena they're yours. No one else ever sees them and are just astonished when you point them out. 😍

We may have a winner in the #StrangeIce category of #Icetodon #Frostodon! 😳😲
If anyone else wants to try this, do send photos....https://mastodon.social/@poswald/111713945644240672
HT @poswald I searched and found the original posts I had read about this kind of ice:http://www.jrcarter.net/ice/extrude/
http://www.jrcarter.net/ice/extrude78/Unfortunately it seems Dr. Carter passed away in 2022 but his site is still up and full of weird ice info.
Here's another timelapse example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbiEfr5FxEA

@epicdemiologist - @Ruth_Mottram Here's a helical icicle I found in the stairwell of the UGA College of Public Health back in 2018! #icetodon -

Ruth_Mottram - Ok mastodon, (or at least the part of it currently going through a big freeze), show me your strange ice pictures, your weird ice spikes, needle ice, hair ice and frazil ice, your beautiful ice crystals. Is #icetodon a thing yet? It should be. I'll start.
#NeedleIce in the park today.. typically forms.when ground is warm (above zero) and air temperature cold (well below zero). -

It can’t be such a bad day when you get a full 22 degree circle, sundogs, an upper tangent arc and a circumzenithal arc hanging high over your experiment. And the beam is up. #ISIS #neutrons #StrangeIce

The record low #SeaIce situation around #Antarctica has taken a lot of the attention this year, but #Greenland also had a #StrangeIce year - smashing monthly mean temperature records in July and again in August - right at the top of the ice sheet at #SummitStation
In the mean time it's the 27th year in a row that @greenlandicesheet has net lost ice.
It's been a very interesting #Wx situation this year - I might blog this later, some details:
