  1. Should You Use An Outline As A Pantser?

Last post, we briefly discussed what we will need to do this October to prepare for NaNoWriMo, and we briefly covered the story’s outline, but what if you aren’t even sure if you should use an outline at all? We could dive into this topic in a variety of ways, one of which is making a pros and cons list and deciding whether the outline will be a good idea, but I think we all already know the result of this. The second idea is deciding if you are the type of person who will be more […]

  2. Building a Foundation: 6 Important Elements of Every Story

I like to think all ideas are good, no matter how simple they sound. But the truth is, a story has to be built on the right foundation, and some story ideas might not have that strong foundation if they don't contain the necessary elements. Before you start writing, here are a few important elements of every character-driven story you need to keep an eye on. Table of contents: Elements of Every StoryMisbelieves and GoalsInternal and External ConflictCauses, Choices, and […]

  3. I spent pretty much my whole day outside in the garden nearly naked under a parasol at the garden table, with an old MacBook running Linux, with external Apple keyboard and Microsoft mouse, doing a lot of writing. I wrote all the premise for an important and significant section of the story. It went well. Then the battery went low, and I’d just about finished the premise so I took it in to charge, leaving the keyboard and mouse there.

In the afternoon I took my more recent MacBook Air M2 out and plugged it into the same external keyboard and mouse there (by an Apple USB-C to USB—A socket adaptor)I started writing a section of exposition in the script, I gave names to two of the characters we haven’t seen talking before (they were there in the queue in page 1 panel 1 though) and this went on for quite a while explaining all the stuff in the premise. I finished it late in the afternoon. Good day’s work, now I need to do thumbnail sketches as storyboards for that section, then at a later point, draw each panel, then ink them, then lay them out on the page.

I like this nice warm heatwave weather, I can’t work in anything cold or horrible. This is perfect for getting work done.

  4. Flash Fiction – A Small Invasion

Nobody took much notice of the small Halloween pod that appeared in the Griffiths’ small front window on the night before Halloween. They’d sold the place because it was too small, and the neighbours thought the new owners had placed the pod there. But they were wrong!

The mesmerising, faint green glow out of the eyes and mouth of the pod during daytime Halloween became brighter as the sun set and dusk arrived. It was a sight to behold, especially for the innocent local small children who couldn’t resist posing with it for photos. Their innocence, a stark contrast to the small danger lurking within, made them all the more vulnerable.

    Halloween

Little did they know that the small creature inside was not just observing, but also making intricate plans. Its intelligence, a chilling reminder of the impending threat, was something to be feared and respected.

At the stroke of midnight, the pod cracked open, and the small, agile creature darted out. It was now a master of disguise, mimicking all the costumes it had seen. Its constant shifting and learning, and planning its next move, was a clear sign of the magnitude of the threat.

By dawn, the small population of the street had shrunk, mostly of children. Of course, nobody took any notice of me, the new owner of the Griffiths’ house, as I blended in seamlessly into your world, now a perfect mimic of your kind.

They asked me about the small pod and the missing children, but I denied any knowledge of them. Over the following twelve months, the city’s human population decreased.

On the run-up to Halloween, keep your eyes peeled for a small alien pod in your neighbourhood. But more importantly, keep a close eye on your neighbours. After all, every invasion starts small.

  5. Flash Fiction – Follow The Feathers

Slowly opening the front door, Adrian listened for signs of life.

Fairly confident that nobody was home, he stepped inside.

Should he go to the kitchen for snacks or upstairs to turn on his new PlayStation and watch his new favourite show? What lay on the stairs held the answer. Brightly coloured feathers going up the stairs piqued his curiosity to follow them. How did they get there?

Hearing muffled voices, he suddenly stopped and walked towards where they were coming from. The door to his parents’ bedroom wasn’t fully closed, allowing him to look through the small gap.

The scent of his mother’s perfume hit his nostrils. She was sitting down with her back to the door wearing a dress he’d never seen her in before, one his father had probably bought her. A feathered boa lay around her neck. The mystery of the strange coloured feathers was solved. He watched briefly as she scrunched her hair and wondered if she knew the zip on the back of the dress was not zipped up all the way. Had she had her hair styled differently? It didn’t look right. Something nagged at him.

    “Mum?”

“Adrian!” came a deep, shocked voice. His father turned around to face the door, spitting a feather out of his mouth; his expression readable. “I thought you were going to Danny’s after college?”

Adrian froze, his heart racing. The sight of his father, clad in a dress, feather boa and wig, left him speechless. The room behind the door filled with an awkward silence, until broken by the soft rustle of the feathers and then laughter.

“Uh, I—” his father stammered, a mix of surprise and embarrassment washing over his face. “This isn’t what it looks like.”

Adrian blinked, trying to process the scene. “Then what is it?” he asked, as he pushed open the door.

His mother laughed nervously and joined his father from the other side of the room, a playful spark in her eyes. “Maybe we should tell him. It’s about time he knows.”

With a sigh, Adrian’s father straightened and took a deep breath. “Alright, Adrian. This isn’t what you think. Your mother and I are part of a show for the charity gala this weekend. We thought it would be fun to do a dress-rehearsal at home.”

“Dress-rehearsal?” Adrian echoed, incredulity giving way to excitement. The mystery of the feathers and the strange scene before him transformed into something far more compelling.

“Yes!” his mother said, smiling brightly. “We could really use your help! How about you watch us rehearse and tell us what you think?”

Realising he was now part of this unexpected adventure, Adrian grinned. “No thanks. I’d rather go on my PlayStation. But have fun.”

As laughter filled the room, Adrian walked to his bedroom, his earlier curiosity now filled with enthusiasm for a new side of his parents and their secret world.

Switching on his PlayStation, Adrian didn’t play any games. He connected to the BBC iPlayer to watch a newly discovered show which had now become his favourite.

“Welcome to RuPaul’s Drag Race UK,” said another man wearing a dress. He looked far more glamorous than Adrian’s father did.

when a Wisp's vessel can no longer support the Wisp there is a chance the Wisp "sleeps" and awakes when another vessel is in the same vicinity to the "sleeping" Wisp and then the Wisp becomes a soul of the vessel(can happen to those already with a soul).

This could even remain constant across gender change! Let's try it:

Kam¹ had seen the Doctor² recover from near death, but he¹ didn't think he² could survive this one. So he¹ was astounded when his² unmoving form got up, changing to look exactly like Jodie Whittaker.

"What?" she² demanded, glaring at him¹. "It's just regeneration."

"Fine," he¹ retorted, taking female form. After all, she¹ wasn't called Kamelion for nothing.

Come to think of it, I wonder if that's easily understandable.

"Peter watched John as he² cooked his¹ breakfast the way he¹ had seen his² mother do it."

    or maybe

"Peter¹ watched John² as he² cooked his¹ breakfast the way he¹ had seen his² mother do it."

You know, I might actually try this, for my story writing!

  9. Franz Kafka was an author whose writing became famous years after his death in 1924. He is most noted for the novella: “Metamorphosis”.

I studied Metamorphosis and other tales he authored at university. I think he was a true master of his craft.

I read a story about Kafka recently (follow the link) which I think captures an interesting side to his personal life.

In the park, we saw a huge walled in area. It had an entrance, so that's where we went, to check things out.

Inside, there was a house. It was shaped like a trailer, but its front was three gigantic doors. My friends started giggling at its appearance. It was a stupid looking house. It didn't make sense. Why would someone build a house here? In the park? Why hadn't we seen it before, even though we've been here numerous times?

I looked to the left of the clearing. I saw a man, with wiry white hair, and dark eyes. When he saw me look at him, he made a wicked smile. He was wearing a suit.

I turned around. That smile struck me like a knife... I needed to leave... but my friends were still giggling. They hadn't seen the man yet.

In my wheelchair, I started heading back towards the entrance to the park, which was a ways away.

Then I heard a crack, almost like thunder, and everything before me started being torn from the ground, and then flying into the air.

I looked behind me. There was a hole in the sky. It was sucking in everything... light, air, grass, trees, people...

I tried to hold on... to the ground... I was old, and not as strong as I used to be... It felt like there was no chance I would be able to hold on for long.

From miles away, things flew across the park... Mostly bits of earth... but also cars, leaves, sticks, shrubs, bark...

A lot of it missed me. I don't know how. The hole in the shy got bigger, and bigger, and it kept pulling more and more.

I couldn't see my friends anymore. I screamed, but I held on. I looked behind me. Trees barely flew over me, sticks hit me in the face, and bramble almost knocked me over. I knew that if I got knocked back, I would get sucked into the hole.

Eventually, it died down. I didn't know how... or why... but it did. The hole slowly started getting smaller... I could barely notice it at first... and then it was gone. The sky went from gray back to as bright as it was before. I looked around... in the open expanse that was left for anything—anyone—but I didn't see anything.

Then I felt a buzz in my pocket. It was my phone.

I pulled it out of my pocket. The screen was a dark red, with a number in the corner—19. A voice came from it and said "Total survivors... 19." ... "Congratulations." "Would you like some accommodations?"

A box popped up on the screen with a check mark and an "X." I hit the check mark and it showed me a wheelchair. I'd lost mine when everything started getting sucked up.

I selected the wheelchair, and pressed accept.

    The voice spoke again.

    "Only the weak need accommodations."

"You have been entered into the next round."

I felt really fucking pissed for a moment. How was I supposed to know that getting another wheelchair would put me into the next round?

Then two names popped up on the screen. My name, Deborah, and another name, Sicily. I heard the voice of a young girl, and there was an audio symbol next to the name. It sounded like she was crying (slow, drawn out, hopeless crying).

"Hello?" I said. "I just watched all of my friends die."

"SHUT UP!" the voice said, and continued crying.

Then a bunch of other names appeared on the screen, and started talking.

"Whoah! Did you see that? Oh, dude! I don't know how I survived!"

    "Sheesh! What the hell is—"

"I'm so hungry! I just wanted something to eat!"

    "Will you fuck off?!"

"Yeah, man, that was crazy! My mom got sucked right through the dining room window! I don't know how I'm still here!"

I couldn't hear the girl's voice over all of the commotion... I knew she was among the 19 voices, though.

    Then I woke up.

This was based on a dream I just had.
