  1. We've just had #StormAshley make some significant rearrangements to our coastline here on Seil.
It occurred to me that, because summer hasn't been good this year, the sea wasn't warmed as much as it might have been; if the sea surface had been warmed by another couple of degrees - not unusual - would the extra energy available have boosted Storm Ashley to be much more violent, with much worse results for the west coast of #Scotland & all the islands of Britain and Ireland?

  3. While walking Sandy the deaf BC today in the aftermath of #StormAshley, I was taken by the patterns of the swirled grass which brought the brush strokes of V. Van Gogh to mind. The colours in the original photos seemed (aptly, given the circumstances) rather washed out; so I tweaked them on my phone.
I think there are possibilities here...

  5. Storm Ashley was definitely making its presence felt over Derwent Water yesterday.
Swirls of water dancing on the surface as mini tornadoes formed and banks of haze over 30 feet tall being dragged across the lake as the wind rushed through Borrowdale and up towards Skiddaw.
The most brutal conditions I've ever shot in and some of the toughest light so here's a quick snippet. Compositionally poor, but the feeling of being there in the moment was astounding!

  7. Just found the biggest pine cone I’ve ever seen in my garden. It must have been blown there by #StormAshley as there are no fir trees nearby. Good job nobody was out there at the time as it could have done them a serious injury! 😵‍💫

  9. We got away lightly here in #Maynooth with #stormashley, sure, it was a deeply unpleasant walk, but all I saw was some small windfall like this fir cone.

  25. “The Plock of Kyle (Am Ploc in Gaelic) is the beautiful promontory west of Kyle of Lochalsh. The road to the Skye Bridge crosses its southern shores, but away from the road the Plock is a wonderful place to explore, with wild flower meadows, native woodland, a series of hidden rocky coves and a fine viewpoint.”

The storm last night forced me to stay in Kyle. I’m heading home soon by public service ‘bus.

  28. 👏Hat tip to the crew of fr5404 Ryanair flight from Murcia to Dublin tonight. We expected to land like Dorothy's house in the Wizard of Oz, but despite the whipping tail of #StormAshley they got us down safely to the relief of all on board 👏

  29. Well, the lights seem to be staying on this time. Looks like that 2pm tomorrow timeline for getting the power on was expert expectation management by the ESB. 🙏🤞#DublinPowerCut #StormAshley #ashley #Mastodaoine

  31. Ellenabeich jetty and the ferry slip at high tide this evening. The jetty is underwater; the ferry shed is flooded. Flotsam in the water included several beer kegs, a crate for roofing slates and a house for sale sign. A weighty metal workbench was washed up the slope from the shed.

Some properties elsewhere on Seil (including Balvicar Stores & PO) and on Easdale Island were flooded.

There will be much tidying up to do in the morning.

  35. Storm season has arrived in Ireland!

Storm Ashley has been battering the West of the country today. It’s not been as bad here in the sheltered environs of Maynooth, though we have had gusts up to 80 km/h which has left my garden in disarray with leaves and twigs all over the place.

  36. Enough wind!
I’m on the boat, in a marina, and it just heeled so far in a gust that my dinner nearly escaped across the table.

  40. Storm Ashley here was all sunny and windy earlier so I opened all the windows to get it all aired out. Now a bit rainy but some serious winds and all. I do agree that the storms should be named after big oil execs instead of miscellaneous cute names. I brought my little lemon tree in of course. #stormashley #bigoil #ecopunk #airout #lemontree #citrus #SundayFunday #sundayvibes
