In 2005 former (or current according to himself) World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer was granted an Icelandic citizenship.

I was inspired by an episode of #BehindTheBastards about Fischer which explained much about his antisemitic views but left open the question why Icelanders wanted him after all that had gone before. This episode tries to answer that question.

In Iceland there is a house named after a (not yet) Lord Dillon who spent a year here in the 1830s. There is a simple and rather sad romantic story connected to the house. It seemed an easy episode idea for my podcast #StoriesOfIceland.

Was this gentleman Catholic or Protestant? I ended up digging through #IrishHistory, specifically the #Jacobites and the #WilliamiteWar. I had to cut most of it from the episode but I will likely return to the subject in the future.
