  1. If you’ve made it this far, you have my deep appreciation. But if you’ve made it this far, you’re probably wondering what you can do to help. So here is a by no means exhaustive list of things to do:

    1. Educate yourself. Follow #ActuallyAutistic content creators. Read NeuroClastic. Talk to autistic people.

    2. Donate to groups that are run by #ActuallyAutistic people.

    3. Support and amplify autistic voices on Twitter and anywhere else.

    4. Educate others. Make sure they aren’t donating to hate groups. Make sure that they understand why it’s important to listen to autistic voices.

    5. Be an ally. Stand up against ABA and other worthy causes like #StopTheShock. Educate people when you see them using a puzzle piece for autism. Tell NPR that Autism Speaks is a hate group and it shouldn’t let them sponsor radio stations.

    6. And lastly, give an autistic person a hug. But ask first. /END

  2. @dramypsyd @actuallyautistic #StopTheShock & #ABAIsAbuse were very prominent & railed against in the autistic community over on X-itter when I was there. We really do need to keep this pressure on.

These abusive monsters have managed to get ABA labelled as, "The Gold Standard for Autism treatment" I shit you not.

Studying autism for my master's we were introduced to ABA by some vicious little sociopath who clearly hated autistic people.

I was the only autistic there & I was the only one who raised an issue & challenged it. Every other student had autistic kids & they didn't bat an eyelid.

Call it out. Get pissed off. Shame every practitioner & apologist.

  3. @dramypsyd I remember hearing about JRC on All Things Considered (NPR)... Horrible

  4. 🪐 me Autistic organizing: #stoptheshock!!! :akko_fistup:

me showing up to electrolysis: start the shock :akko_tired:
  5. CW: hashtags for conversion practices, behaviour normalisation

A few hashtags relating to something that still happens in far too many countries but really needs to stop, because in all its guises it is abuse, if not torture:

    #ABA
    #BanABA
    #BanConversionTherapy
    #ConversionPractice
    #ConversionTherapy
    #EndConversionTherapy
    #PBS
    #StopTheShock

  6. Emily Paige Ballou (on twitter):
Fellow New Yorkers, please write or call your state senators if you can to ask them to support Andre's Law, which would prevent us from sending any more disabled young New Yorkers to an abusive, out-of-state institution.

    Please boost.

  7. CW: Electroshock

Re-posting this (see link below) instead of boosting so I can add a content warning.

    "The Long Road to #StoptheShock

The campaign to end electroshock torture treatments at a school for children with disabilities."

  8. The New York state legislature has reintroduced a bill that would stop sending any more New Yorkers to the Judge Rotenberg Center. If you are a resident of New York, give your legislators a call today about supporting Andre’s Law! #StopTheShock autisticadvocacy.org/2023/02/a

  9. @actuallyautistic

Yep, the correct answer is the Judge Rotenberg Center, a place where some inmates are shackled to electric shock devices indefinitely.

  10. @cavar I really appreciate(d) the spaces #ActuallyAutistic, #StopTheShock, #NEISvoid, and #PwME hashtags facilitated on Twitter. I also (every now and then) participated in the weekly #AutChat and occasional #SpoonieChat discussions.

  11. CW: Torture of autistic people and some good news #StopTheShock

@autism Amazing news! Thank you for sharing

  12. CW: Torture of autistic people and some good news #StopTheShock

For those who have been following the story about the torture of autistic people at the Judge Rotenberg Center: ABAI members just voted AGAINST Contingent Electric Skin Shock, and that is now therefore the official ABAI position!

This step forward is a victory for disability rights activists!

What happens next to #StopTheShock? We don't know yet. There are laws before Congress at the moment, but that is a separate process.

  13. CW: CW: Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) #BanABA

My video on why activists want to #BanABA for use on autistic people (i.e., to ban nonconsensual 'interventions' or 'therapies' based on Applied Behavioural Analysis).

This video requires an update now that it is becoming clearer that the roleplayers with an interest in the infamous Judge Rotenberg Center continue to exert strong influence on the ABA industry. #StopTheShock

  14. Part of my reason for creating @autisticadvocacy is that there are important, long-term campaigns that don’t seem to gain momentum in the Fediverse, whereas they generate a lot of discussion on the birdsite for instance

Where are all the people campaigning to #BanABA, #BanPBS, #StopTheShock?

Where are all the non-speakers and their speaking Autistic allies? #ListenToNonSpeakers #CommunicationIsAHumanRight

Where are all the people with intersecting minority status (#/AutisticWhileBlack etc.)?

  15. CW: Torture but pls share

Virtual protest against the Judge Rotenberg Center, a school for disabled people in massachusetts which has been condemned for torture by the UN.
Most of the students are non-white, making this both an issue of disability and race. They shock students with a device called the GED which delivers a stronger shock than a taser and can leave burns.
